With all of the news lately about America and "us" vs "them" we need something to bring us together. We're starting a multicultural book club in Oakland and want you to join us on 3/19 for our first book talk.
All too often book clubs become a space where we hear and associate with people that look and think like us. I want to invite people of all colors and backgrounds in to this space to meet, talk and discuss books.
The first meeting will be held on 3/19 (Sunday) at 100 Grand in Oakland. We're near the 19th street BART station and we're in the first floor conference room. Please register early. This room can only seat 15 people. Please arrive at 2pm - we're starting on time.
The first book comes as a recommendation from a friend (Susan Mernit, CEO of Hack the Hood) and will be Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafar. I'm excited - it's described as the Nigerian Harry Potter. And with all that's been going on, I think we can all use a flight of fancy!
I'd love to have this book club at least monthly. We'll see how this first event works out and take it from there. I am excited to create a new community. Thank you for being part of this journey to create something positive, community oriented and lasting with me.
