We have prepared a wonderful evening that highlights and celebrates the outstanding demonstration of character, commitment, civility, and citizenship of extraordinary women in our communities. 

These "Mujeres" come from a variety of professional fields and disciplines and will be awarded for their impact, influence, and inspiration.

I am honored to have the opportunity to work and build unbreakable bonds with these outstanding women. This year we have an amazing group of awardees that are making immeasurable impacts in our communities. 

I would like to take a few moments to give my personal thanks to our board of directors, sponsors, members, family, and friends; without their continued support and contribution, we would not be able to accomplish our great ambitions. 

We give special thanks to our Regional Hispanic Leadership Council, of which are students and recent graduates of the California State University System: Andrew Gonzales Sandoval, Javier Zamorano, Tania Alvarez and Mauricio Güitrón Piña... YOU are the BEST!!

Priscilla Orozco serves as a Public Affairs Specialist for State Farm Insurance in California.Priscilla Orozco serves as a Public Affairs Specialist for State Farm Insurance in California. Her geographic responsibilities include various areas within Los Angeles County. Her primary responsibilities include building and maintaining strong community and media relationships and supporting programs with a focus in Education, Safety, and Community Development. She serves as public policy liaison to assist in educating local elected officials as well as State Farm associates on issues that impact the insurance industry.

 

She began her career with State Farm Insurance in 1994 working in various capacities including Auto Claims Representative, Trainee Agent, and Claim Supervisor. Priscilla is the recipient of the 2011 Dulcinea Award for her commitment to young Latinas through the sharing of her educational, career and leadership journeys. She is an active board member for the YMCA of Long Beach-Early Childhood Development. Priscilla is a 2005 alumni member of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (H.O.P.E.) Leadership Institute and former President of the Foothill ROC Toastmasters Club. 

 

Born and raised in Sacramento, Priscilla has a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix Sacramento Campus and a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from California State University of Sacramento.

City Auditor of Long Beach

Laura Doud is the elected City Auditor of Long Beach, a position often called the "watchdog" of the City's Treasury.

Born and raised in Long Beach, Laura received her education entirely in her home city. She attended LBUSD schools from kindergarten through high school and graduated from Long Beach City College and California State University, Long Beach. Even her law degree (JD) was earned in Long Beach at Pacific Coast University School of Law. Laura is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).

First elected in 2006 and re-elected for a second four-year term in 2010, Laura is one of only four elected City Auditors in California - giving Long Beach the benefit of having an independent City Auditor. As City Auditor, Laura works to improve Long Beach by ensuring that money is spent as intended by the taxpayers and that the City is collecting all revenue that is due.

Approximately $3.5 million has been added every year for the City's Police and Fire protection as a result of the City Auditor's Office Report on Oil Extraction fees. In that report, Laura recommended an update of oil production tax rates resulting in a ballot measure that earned unprecedented voter approval and has contributed over $19 million since 2007 for public safety.

Under Laura's direction, the City Auditor's Office has produced nationally recognized audits with significant impact. In 2013, the Association of Local Government Auditors awarded its prestigious Knighton Award for the Parking Citations Collection Process Audit, which found nearly $18 million in unpaid parking tickets.

Laura lives in Long Beach with her husband, Jim, and their daughter, Kelly. In addition to her public service, she is an active member of her church and supports many community organizations. She currently serves on the Honorary Board of Governors of Leadership Long Beach and has recently been inducted into the Long Beach Community College Hall of Fame.

Yasmin Davidds is an Organizational Psychologist, International Negotiation Consultant and Executive Coach. As one of the top leading Latina negotiation experts in the U.S. and Latin America, Dr. Davidds has trained and counseled over 2,000 corporate leaders in over 200 blue chip companies throughout 22 countries in the art and skill of negotiation. 

Her clients have ranged from senior judges to tribal leaders, from unionized prison guards to accountants, and from railroad officials to diplomatic trainees. Her practical experience includes a wide range of public and private sector efforts in Brazil, Columbia, Argentina, England, France, Spain, South Africa and the U.S. She has helped lead intervention and assistance programs to disputing parties and has advised corporate, non-profit and governmental teams on how to prepare for important negotiations.

As a Hispanic Market Consultant for U.S. and Latin America Fortune 500 Companies, Yasmin trains company executives how to proactively utilize cause-related public relation strategies to attract Hispanic consumers. With her diversity expertise in the area of heightening awareness and creating levels of comfort when working with Hispanic markets, she has assisted clients in creating astounding goodwill with the Hispanic community. 

She has developed internal/external marketing programs, implemented Hispanic recruitment and retention programs, and advised clients on how to develop strategic partnerships with Hispanic grassroots organizations.

Ms. Guzman was born and raised in Fairfield, California and is the daughter of the late Amado Guzman and Anita Guzman of Fairfield. She is a first generation college graduate of the University of California at Davis (B.A., 1985; J.D., 1988). She resides in Fair Oaks, California.

She is a certified Woman and Hispanic owned law firm and a partner of Goldsberry Freeman & Guzman, LLP. Ms. Guzman's practice focuses on representing private and non-profit corporations, foundations, media interests, venture and equity capital firms, insurance carriers, and other business interests. She is a dedicated public servant with expertise in finance, governance, employment, higher education and business. She is highly regarded for her work on governance issues and she is a noted speaker and trainer on the fiduciary duties of officers and directors of boards of directors.

Ms. Guzman has served as an independent director for the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco since 2007 where she is Chair of the bank's Governance Committee. The Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco delivers low-cost funding and other services that help member financial institutions make home mortgages to people of all income levels and provide credit that supports neighborhoods and communities.

In 2011, Ms. Guzman was appointed by California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones to Chair the California Insurance Diversity Task Force to explore issues regarding diversity in the insurance industry in governance, philanthropy, supplier diversity and member issues. In 2003, she was appointed by Governor Gray Davis to serve as a member of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges. 

Ms. Guzman is a Board Leadership Fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors. She is a member of the La Raza National Lawyers Association, and Women Lawyers of Sacramento. She has held innumerable positions as officer and director of these and other associations.

Alma McMaster is a Supplier Diversity & Development Program Manager for Southern California Edison and is responsible for Latino Business outreach programs. Before coming to Edison in 2009, Alma spent 18 years in the automotive industry, serving 15 of those years as a Purchasing Manager for two of the largest Asian-owned automotive companies in the U.S.

Throughout her tenure as a Purchasing Manager, a portion of Alma's responsibility was developing and sustaining Supplier Diversity Programs. It was through this experience Alma realized that supplier diversity was her calling as it was a way to utilize her business background while fulfilling her desire to help the diverse Business community succeed.

Alma has been able to leverage her extensive knowledge of corporate procurement to develop, advocate and promote the advancement of diverse business enterprises throughout SCE and beyond. Alma, a true advocate for Latino Businesses, works with and serves as a corporate advisor to many Latino Business organizations including the U.S. and California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, many of their local chambers, the Latino Business Chamber of Commerce, as well as the National Latina Business Women Association-LA, who honored her this year with a "Women of Excellence" award.

Alma is especially proud that in the last 3 years SCE achieved spend of over $1.0 Billion dollars with Latino businesses. In 2012 alone, SCE reported spend with Latino Businesses of over $360 Million, which represented 9% of SCE's spend, the largest percentage of spend with any ethnic business group.

Cindy Orozco was born in Los Angeles California. Her parents immigrated to the US from Mexico, and married here in Los Angeles in 1973. Cindy is the first born of 4 children.

At a very young age Cindy learned from her parents what an entrepreneurial life was, and the sacrifices needed when building a successful business. Her mother was her biggest role model; she influenced her in many ways. Cindy attended Los Cerritos College where she learned business administration, accounting and marketing. She also attended Southern California School of Interpretation.

Cindy is currently the Vice President and CFO of Orozco's Auto Service, manages the marketing department, and directs all financial aspects of the business. She has a strong team that supports her, and is lucky to have a wonderful staff.

Cindy has been happily married for 17 years to Servando Orozco with 3 children. She feels her biggest accomplishment and what she is most proud of is her family, to see smiles in her children's face and to know she can always count on her loving husband to be her biggest supporter.




Connie PerezConnie Perez, CPA

Born in Tulare County to Mexican immigrant parents, Connie Perez came from modest beginnings on a labor camp to become a successful executive and strong advocate for Latinos. Ms. Perez is a partner with Brown Armstrong Accountancy Corporation. She began her career with the firm as a staff accountant and rose through the ranks to become one of only two Latinas to make partner in the 38year history of the firm. She also serves on the American Institute of Certified Accountants (AICPA) National Commission on Diversity and Inclusion where she is focused on outreach and education to diverse communities on accounting careers.

Governor Edmund G. Brown appointed Ms. Perez as Commissioner to the State Lottery Commission. She is the designated representative for Central California and the only female and Latina commissioner. Ms. Perez also serves as a Board Member and Treasurer on the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, representing the interests of businesses across the central region, a territory that goes from Yuba County south to Kern County.

Giving back and supporting her community has always been important to Ms. Perez. She continues to be involved with several non-profits in the community. In 2012, Ms. Perez also co-founded the first Career Day at her former grammar school, Woodville Elementary School, where fourteen speakers shared their career story with the students who were predominately living on the nearby labor camp where she was also raised. Ms. Perez also serves on the board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles where she is helping to grant wishes to children suffering from life threatening illnesses with a specific focus on wishes for children with Spanish language needs.

Ms. Perez is featured in the documentary funded by the Cal Humanities Community Stories Fund and CSUB titled "Camp to Campus" that premiered on February 5, 2013, in the Dore Theater (http://www.csub.edu/camptocampus/). The 90-minute film focuses on first-generation college graduates who come from a migrant labor background.
Ms. Perez was recently honored by the Kern County Hispanic Chambers of Commerce as Business Woman of the year and by Hispanic Lifestyle as a Latina of Influence.

For 50 years, Naomi Rainey has been actively involved with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)-a tenure that began in L.A. County's Antelope Valley area where she grew up, becoming the local NAACP youth chapter president when she was 14 years old.

For the past thirteen years, she has served as president of the NAACP Long Beach Branch, which earned the National Thalheimer Award thanks to Rainey's commitment to civil rights. Rainey holds several teaching credentials, and since 2003, has worked as an independent education consultant.

She was an educator and an administrator in the Long Beach and Compton Unified School Districts, serving as a district administrator and assistant principal at the high school level. Among her community activities, she serves on the Long Beach City College Foundation, past Vice President of the California State Conference NAACP, St. Mary's Medical Center Board of Trustees and the Todd Cancer Institute, Long Beach Cancer League, and many other commissions and boards throughout the city and state.

She was appointed to the State's Advisory Commission on Special Education. Her honors include the L.A. County Human Relations Award, Teacher of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Woman of the Year, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peacemakers Award, and the Sojourner Truth Award. She was included in Who's Who in Black Los Angeles, Celebrating African-American Achievements.

Mrs. Rainey-Pierson is an accomplished businesswoman, and a sought-after public speaker. She is highly recognized for her community service and philanthropy. She is proud of her family and to carry out the legacy of her late husband. Also, Naomi Rainey-Pierson is deeply grounded in her religious faith.

Ms. Rodriguez has ten years of experience as a lobbyist for Leal & Trejo APC. In this role she provides analysis and advice on legislative issues and is the liaison between elected officials, the firm, and its clients. Ms. Rodriguez is responsible for coalition building and resource identification that leads to successfully bringing major community development projects to fruition. These community development projects include Public Parks, Healthy Programs, and After School Funding Programs for School Districts.

Ms. Rodriguez is instrumental in advancing issues such as obtaining state funding to address infrastructure needs, municipal water testing, and identifying vital resources for local municipalities. Ms. Rodriguez also focuses on community development and legislative policy advocacy in the areas of education, social services, environmental, and transportation.

Ms. Diana was born in the small town of Mesillas, Sombrerete Zacatecas Mexico, immigrated to the fabulous United States in 1965 when she was one year old. Diana is the youngest of eleven siblings she has seven sisters and three brothers. Ms. Rodriguez mother's name is Juanita Rodriguez Fraire and her dad's name is Luis Rodriguez. 

Diana's mom was a seamstress and her dad was a carpenter when he retired but he worked many jobs throughout his life to provide for the family. Ms. Rodriguez is a graduate of California State University, Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and a Jurisdiction Doctorate from University of West Los Angeles School of Law. She is also a graduate of the HOPE Leadership Institute class of 2003. Ms. Rodriguez continues to be involved with local and national issues that affect the Latino Community.

Efficient and effective, she makes real estate transactions as stress-free as possible for her clients. Her outstanding production is evidenced by her membership in the prestigious RE/MAX International Hall of Fame and her standing as 2012 Top Producer for RE/MAX Execs. With over 24 years of experience selling South Bay real estate, Angelica is also fluent in both Spanish and English.

Irene was born in Nayarit, and raised in Mazatlán and Sinaloa México. She is the daughter of a Chinese immigrant; her mother is native of Nayarit. Mazatlán is famous for its local cultural affairs; this is where her passion began for Mexican and Latin American Folklore. Irene came to the United States to study at Northridge California University. She didn't finish her Bachelor's Degree, but "I got my Mrs. Degree," she jokingly says. Irene's joviality, good humor, and friendly but assertive manner makes her an influential Hispanic woman who, combining thrive, hard work, and love for her cultural heritage, can organize important events, promote Hispanic traditions, and work with the community at all levels.

Irene has worked with the Mexican and Latino communities for the last 25 years, both as public relations professional and as a Mexican woman proud of her cultural heritage. Amongst a long list of accomplishments, Irene directed Independence Day's Parade in East Los Angeles, making possible for several states such as Michoacán, Jalisco, Oaxaca, and Zacatecas, just to name a few, to be represented during this important annual celebration remembering Mexico's Independence from Spain taking place the Sunday previous to La Noche del Grito (Sept. 15). 

Over the years, for the parade, Irene was able to secure Latino stars as Grand Mariscal: Oscar de la Hoya, Los Tigres del Norte, Antonio Aguilar, Juan Gabriel, Verónica Castro, Ignacio Lopez Tarzo, Eric del Castillo and many others.

The energetic, full of positivism woman has worked closely with the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles and for the "Comité Mexicano Cívico Patriótico" to enhance and promote hundreds of community and cultural events. In one occasion, She brought the "Escuadrón 501," the only air force that Mexico sent to WWII. Currently, she is a cultural ambassador for the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, founded by Carmen Zapata, a Mexican actress who has a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. She also does public relations for Tango Power, and is part of the dance group as well.

Irene has lived in Bolivia and Ecuador, and travels extensively. Every time she goes overseas, she always takes a "Rebozo," and for Fiestas Patrias she wears an authentic Mexican outfit. Irene has one son and one granddaughter. Her extended family resides in Mexico D.F. Aside from being actively engaged in the community; Irene spends time taking care of her beautiful cactus garden, and being a great friend.

Mission Statement:

To give entrepreneurs alternatives for life preparation and life-long learning by developing and implementing initiatives and educational campaigns to awaken and nurture their entrepreneur spirit.

History

In 2007, the Regional Hispanic Chamber of Commerce developed its educational support component, the Regional Hispanic Institute (RHI). As a 501c-3 tax-exempt organization, the RHI is able to provide its community with educational opportunities that is illustrated in its mission. The RHI stands as one preeminent organizations of leaders  in Califiornia.

Since its inception, the RHI's guiding precept and goal was to galvanize and unify the ever- growing community of Latino Leaders in California. The RHI also seeks to harness the skills, education and resources of Latino Leaders to assist the next generation of leaders.

What We Do

RHI offers a wide variety of resources to its members such as monthly networking meetings with major corporations, scholarship opportunities from educational partners such as California State  University and Long Beach City College as well as access to employment opportunities throughout the country.
