MTConnect Student Challenge - An Internet of Things for Manufacturing Competition

Thursday, December 3, 2015 at 11:30am MST

Arizona State University

Memorial Union, Room 242

Join us for lunch and information about a tech-focused maker competition, where we will discuss challenges in the manufacturing industry and how your bright ideas could help solve these issues and win you up to $33K in cash prizes! The MTConnect Student Challenge is an innovation competition that is open to all enrolled college students who have innovative ideas and applications that utilize the MTConnect standard— an open, non-proprietary standard intended to foster better communication between manufacturing devices, and ultimately help create the future of the Industrial Internet.

The event will be focused on getting attendees quickly up to speed on MTConnect, possible tools they may need to work with the data, and pointers to open source technology to begin their work with a minimal learning curve and startup cost. We encourage all students, faculty, and education professionals to join us to learn more about the challenge— which could also serve as a rewarding thesis topic, internship, or capstone project. Food will be served.

About the MTConnect Student Challenge
The MTConnect Student Challenge is a crowdsourced, tech-focused maker competition especially for college students. Entrants are tasked with creating ideas and applications utilizing MTConnect, an open, HTTP- and XML-based standard to foster greater interoperability between industrial equipment and devices. MTConnect enables equipment to provide data in a uniform XML structure rather than in a proprietary format, therefore opening the possibility to create applications that utilize MTConnect.

Ideation Competition: Students are required to write a five-page paper on a challenge manufacturers experience today; describe potential solutions to that challenge; and propose a solution. The submission period is currently open, and it closes on December 15, 2015. Full rules and submission details are available at www.challenge.gov/challenge/mtconnectstudentideas.

Application Competition: Students are required to develop an application that demonstrates innovation and the use of manufacturing intelligence breakthroughs. Submissions will be rated based on their potential to create achievable and measurable benefits to manufacturing operations – improving efficiencies, minimizing waste, reducing costs, etc. Submission for this competition is also currently open and will close on January 31, 2016. Full rules and submission details are available at www.challenge.gov/challenge/mtconnectstudentapps.

The MTConnect Student Challenge is sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Defense-wide Manufacturing Science and Technology (DMS&T) and executed by AMT-The Association For Manufacturing Technology, the U.S. Army Benét Labs, the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), and the MTConnect Institute, in partnership with SME and the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA).
