MSA Showdown: Retreat 2017
Fri, Apr 14, 2017, 11:00 AM – Sun, Apr 16, 2017, 9:00 AM EDT
Since 2014, the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) MSA has organized the MSA Showdown. This three day long conference consists of competitions and spiritual enlightenment. Organized separately for both brothers and sisters, activities include hiking, sports, nasheed, films, photography, poetry, tajweed, film, and writing.
The purpose of MSA Showdown: Retreat 2017 is to unify MSAs for the sake of Allah. It serves as a forum for efficient and effective interaction between MSAs across the United States. The committee focuses on facilitating networking and training/development, and operates with the understanding that through cooperation we can achieve much more than we can accomplish individually.
Under the guidance of the MSA Lone star council, MSA showdown has been connecting MSAs to one another and to useful resources. the goal is to create a network where MSAs can discuss possible solutions to problems and exchange ideas that help these organizations reach their highest potential. Additionally, we are focusing on leadership development for the executive officers to provide them with practical tools to manage their MSA board.
Theme: Back to the Basics
Since the very beginning of revelation, the Prophet ﷺ taught the basic tenets of Islam: Worship of Allah alone, and belief in the Hereafter. It is upon this foundation that our community was built, and it is upon this foundation that the Believers find their strength.
Since the beginning, Muslims have been faced with test after test. The early Muslims were boycotted, persecuted, and attacked. But the Prophet ﷺ taught that death is not something to fear, because this world is only temporary; that we shouldn’t rely on worldly possessions, because Allah will provide; and that we shouldn’t love material things, because what we have in store in the hereafter is far better than anything this world has to offer.
Allah reminds us that “If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (Alone) let the believers rely.”
We see this theme throughout the Quran and through the seerah of the Prophet ﷺ. When the political powers threatened them, to take away their money, their homes, their basic human rights, they stood strong, knowing that Allah was with them. Nothing could sway them, because they had a higher purpose than any material thing in this world. And because of the strength of their belief, they were able to build a strong, united, Prophetic community.
It’s easy to look at the state of the world today and lose a little hope. Sometimes it seems like the odds are stacked against us, that we are fighting an uphill battle. With the current political climate, with the issues inside our masajid and inside ourselves, it’s easy to lose sight of the real goal. But now, especially, is the time to grind; to go back to the Prophetic example and strengthen our faith and our communities.
“If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (Alone) let the believers rely.” [qur'an 3:160]
This world is heavy. Let’s take refuge from it in a weekend of brotherhood, sisterhood, and remembrance of Allah.
Let’s go back to the basics.
