Description

Please join us at MRC's Ted Moorhead Lagoon House Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 12 pm, for an educational lunchtime learning seminar with Florida Master Naturalist Vince Lamb in a discussion about the Carr Refuge and sea turtles that nest there. Vince Lamb has been volunteering with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission permitted turtle walks in South Brevard since 2008. He serves as a Board Member and Treasurer of the Friends of the Carr Refuge, a non-profit that supports the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge.

Sea Turtle Nesting in the Carr Refuge

The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, formed in 1991, ranges 20.5 miles from Melbourne Beach to Wabasso. When the refuge was formed, USFWS purchased the larger oceanfront parcels that were undeveloped and had willing sellers. The lands placed in conservation represent approximately 20% of the Highway A1A frontage.

Turtle nest monitoring had been conducted by UCF starting in 1981. The data, which showed considerable nesting activity, was used to support the establishment of the refuge. Today, the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge is the most important nesting beach worldwide for loggerhead sea turtles, as well as, the most important nesting beach in North America for green turtles. Located close to the northern extent for leatherback turtle nesting, the refuge provides nesting habitat for a significant number of these endangered giants.

Vince’s presentation will cover the history of the refuge, the research activities conducted by UCF and summary information about the turtles that nest in the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees must register. If interested and able, we ask participants to donate $5 toward our guest speaker series. This educational series is a long-standing and cherished program of the MRC that is supported by volunteers and the community's charitable giving. All donations are tax-deductible.

Attendees are encouraged and welcome to bring and enjoy their lunch during the seminar!
