“The U.S. and Global Leadership in the 21st Century”

America’s need to participate actively in global affairs for its own good, and to a degree for others as well, is indisputable. However, the extent, nature, and particulars of participation are viewed variously. As we reflect on the absolutely fundamental matter of America’s role in the world, we are extraordinarily fortunate to be joined by Jake Sullivan, professor of law at Yale, who has had a brilliant near decade of extraordinary experience at the highest levels of American foreign policy.

Mr. Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University. As a Rhodes Scholar he studied international relations at the University of Oxford where he became the managing editor of the Oxford International Review. He later graduated with a juris doctor degree from Yale Law School in 2003. He was an editor of the Yale Law Journal and the Yale Daily News and worked for Brookings Institution’s Strobe Talbott at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. After his studies, Sullivan clerked for Second Circuit Court of Appeals judge Guido Calabresi and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Stephen Breyer; then practiced and taught law before serving as Counsel to Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

He entered the first rank of national politics as an advisor to Hillary Clinton during the primary cycle in 2008 and Barack Obama during the presidential campaign. After Hillary Clinton became Secretary of State, he joined her as deputy chief of staff and director of policy planning, traveling with her to 112 countries. After her departure from State, he became Vice President Biden's national security advisor before leaving to teach at the Yale Law School in 2014. Among other policy matters, he was deeply involved in the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program. During the 2016 presidential campaign, he was the chief foreign policy advisor to Hillary Clinton.

It is an honor and pleasure to welcome Jake Sullivan to the Council.
