Event Details

The world-renowned Guadalajara based Mariachi “Nuevo Tecalitlan” will perform at the Fort Brown Memorial Center Auditorium on May 5, 2018, as part of the Mr. Amigo 2nd Annual Mariachi Festival and Competition. Texas Southmost College and the Mr. Amigo Association are among numerous presenting sponsors of this two-day event held to celebrate Mariachi cultural traditions between Mexico and the United States. “The members of Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan will offer workshops from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. to mariachi students from across the State of Texas on Friday, May 4, 2018” said director of the Mariachi Festival, Berta Guerra. A goal of the Festival is to encourage and promote the pursuit of higher education attendance among the musically talented middle and high school youth.

On Saturday, May 5, 2018, various student mariachi groups will compete for the opportunity to perform with “Nuevo Tecalitlan” at the evening concert beginning at 7:00 p.m. Tickets will be sold throughout the Rio Grande Valley for the public to enjoy the most unique cultural collaboration ever presented. The concert will begin with the winner of the vocal competition and the Edcouch-Elsa HS based, Mariachi Juvenil Azteca. Official Mariachi Ensemble for the Mr. Amigo Association, “Mariachi Margaritas”, an all female group, will be opening for this event on Saturday May 5, 2018. Doors open at 6:30pm and Concert starts at 7:00pm. El Mariachi “Nuevo Tecalitlan” was formed in 1965 in Guadalajara, Mexico, by accomplished Mariachi musicians. It quickly became a public favorite. By the late 1960s and 1970s “Nuevo Tecalitlan” had toured Columbia, the United States and Spain being accompanied by mariachi greats such as: Lola Beltran, Vicente Fernandez and Charro Avitia. With more than 50 CDs recorded, “Nuevo Tecalitlan” continues to tour throughout Asia, Central and South America, the United States and Europe. They have become the precursor of the classic mariachi sound and instrumentation. Considered to be one of the most accomplished groups in the world, this 14-piece ensemble includes violins, trumpets, guitarron, guitars, vihuela and harp. The origins of the Mariachi Orchestra date back to the Aztec times. Mariachi instruments are traced to the Spanish who derived string groups of the early 19th century in the Mexican State of Jalisco. Mariachi music now serves as the base to the Mexican son Jaliciense form. The Mr. Amigo Board President, Mr. Sergio Martinez, stated that “the organization is proud to assist our young musicians by providing them with the opportunity to be taught by professional world renowned group Mariachi “Nuevo Tecalitlan.” “The organization will make this event an annual long standing tradition in Brownsville, and a tradition of providing higher education opportunities and fellowship with professional Mariachi Ensembles,” said Co-Director, Karina Vela. “Mariachi music, like opera, seems to weave together a long tradition of family and storytelling, both traditions will connect directly to the audience heart,” says Berta Guerra. The music of Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan is melodious and technical and possesses an unceasing glow that reaches into the heart and soul of people young and experienced.

The Mr. Amigo Association is proud to offer these workshops to the students throughout the State of Texas. Mr. Sergio Martinez also stated that this event is a great way to celebrate “El Cinco De Mayo” and a great way to end the 81st anniversary of Charro Days.

    Our Vision

To celebrate the shared culture, friendship and family of Brownsville and Matamoros. To enjoy the traditions and history that unite us bringing “The Valley” and “La Frontera” closer together, serving as an example for our two countries . . . and having some fun while we’re at it.

    Our History

A small group of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce leaders gathered in the early 1960's to discuss a method of developing and implementing a project that would promote relations between the United States and Mexico. This method would also publicize the international way of life in the border cities of Brownsville and Matamoros. The concept of the project was to encompass a "tie-in" with Mexico and would include an extensive publicity campaign to benefit the area. The Chamber of Commerce Bienvenidos Committee was selected to serve as the liaison of the project. The knowledge of many individuals such as: Fausto Yturria, Jr., and the late Bat Corrigan, Eugene S. Hurt, Glen Herman, Dave Cooper, Chano Hinojosa, Steve Bosio and Bill Rudd, contributed significantly to the fruition of the project.

An understanding of Mexico and discussions by the leaders led to the concept of recognizing a Mexican citizen who had contributed to the friendship of the United States and Mexico. The Mexican citizen was designated as "Mr. Amigo." The Mr. Amigo Association was incorporated in early 1964. The first Mr. Amigo celebration was held on October 12, 1964 at the Fort Brown Memorial Center and honored former President of Mexico, Lic. Miguel Aleman.

The Mr. Amigo Association realized that the Charro Days Fiesta, with the various parades, costume balls and large crowds provided the proper atmosphere to promote and recognize the Mr. Amigo honoree. Lic. Jorge Perez y Bouras was the first Mr. Amigo honoree to be recognized during the Charro Days Fiesta in1969. The Mr. Amigo celebrations continue to be an integral part of the Charro Days festivities.

Mr. Raul Velasco, another Mr. Amigo honoree, has given the Mr. Amigo Association worldwide recognition over the years through the "Siempre en Domingo" television program. Similar celebrations now exist in other cities, but Brownsville can proudly claim to be the first to create and accomplish such a unique celebration. The Mr. Amigo celebration includes an extensive publicity campaign which awards the respective honoree and allows the City of Brownsville the opportunity to shine.

At the beginning of NAFTA'S negotiations in 1988-1989, Congressman Solomon Ortiz presented the Mr. Amigo Association with the Mr. Amigo Review Award for the distinction of being one of the first organizations to extend friendship and mutual understanding between the United States and Mexico. The Mr. Amigo Review Award remains on exhibit at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. as a model of International Friendship.

    Choosing Mr. Amigo

The selection process is initiated annually by the President of the Mr. Amigo Association and the Selection Committee composed of four past presidents. The Committee seeks to designate an individual who promotes the improvement of the quality of life in the Hispanic Community and who also serves as a role model for the Community.

The recipient must also be a Mexican citizen who has contributed to the friendship and understanding of the United States and Mexico, and has excelled in their profession, exemplifying the highest standards in their personal and professional life. Over the past 39 years, the Mr. Amigo honoree has been chosen from a wide field of endeavors and accomplishments as illustrated on the Mr. Amigo roster.
