About this event
This MPCA Smart Salting for Roads Certification Training class offers more efficient winter maintenance best practices for plowing, de-icing and anti-icing application, storage, and more. The new chloride requirements in the recently released MS4 permit will also be covered. Participants will learn how to integrate science with practical winter maintenance on roads while minimizing impacts on the environment.
The learning environment for this class is an interactive online format. Instructors will teach class online in real-time. Participants will interact with instructors and other participants through live chats, polls, and class discussion using the WebEx platform. We require attendees to actively participate in the online interactive class in addition to passing the online test to receive certification.

- Those who supervise winter maintenance professionals

Earn the MPCA Smart Salting for Roads Certification and be listed on the MPCA Smart Salting Training webpage. The online test is offered at the end of training and participants are provided 1 hour to complete the test online. The certification is valid for five years.
MPCA permittees are allowed registration preference. If the training exceeds capacity, those that are not permittees will be put on a waitlist and notified accordingly. If you are registering multiple staff who will be participating in the online class together from one computer please register each individual under one group registration. Contact the MPCA Smart Salting program for test options.
Level 1 (individual) training
If you apply road salt, you can learn how to significantly reduce salt use, save money, and protect Minnesota's lakes and streams while maintaining road safety. There are two types of Level 1 trainings:
- Roads class – High/low speed snowplow operation
- Parking lot/sidewalk class – Maintaining private/public walkways and/or parking lots and service roads
This is a 5-year Smart Salting certification; to renew you must attend and pass another class.
