California is a land where people of many different backgrounds have sought to make their lives and their fortunes—from the Indigenous peoples who first inhabited the land to the builders of the railroads that connected California to the rest of the United States and the levees protecting the state’s cities and farmlands. Railroad work brought Chinese, Irish, Mexican, Japanese, and African-American people to California in search of opportunities for themselves and their families.
On April 29, the Great Wall Youth Orchestra will unite all of these traditions through their music, played on traditional Chinese instruments, at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, the western terminus of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad.
