Nancy J. Phillips has been active in the substance abuse field for over thirty years. She has worked in both prevention and treatment services. Currently she serves as the Illinois Family Resource Center Coordinator at Central East Alcoholism & Drug Council. Phillips holds a master’s degree in Educational Psychology from Eastern Illinois University. She is a certified addictions counselor and has served in various treatment roles including supervision of outpatient services.

Why Attend:

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA), the research supports the belief that addiction treatment is strengthened when families are involved in treatment services. The approach for family services may vary since “family” may be parents, siblings, a spouse/child, depending on whether an adolescent or young adult. Through group interaction, participants will review the research and share work experience to help strengthen family services offered in the treatment.

Learning Objectives - Participants will:

Discuss how to use group facilitation and counseling sessions to establish a strength-based approach to family services

Review how to incorporate adults learning theory into their "tool box" of treatment skills

Share their personal experience with maintaining family involvement in services after the initial contacts

Develop strategies that empower families and motivate ongoing involvement in services

Practice techniques that enhance their skills in the use of affirming words and respectful body language

Continuing Education:

Three hours of continuing education credits will be provided to LCPC/LPC, LCSW/LSW, and approval has been applied for through Illinois Certification Board (IOADAPCA)
