Event description

Description

Addiction impacts how a family functions. Often the behaviour and choices of one member with an addiction has huge consequences for the family as a whole. Each family member is affected in their own unique way and may experience a wide array of feelings including guilt, pain, anxiety, confusion, shame, and frustration

By attending family support groups, family members learn to share their concerns, gather resources, find validation of their experiences, thoughts and feelings and learn ways to manage their own lives while coping with the destructive nature of the addict and their addiction. There are very few support groups for family members of addiction in the Montreal English community.

Our mission is to provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where family members of those struggling with addictions can address fears and concerns while receiving support, psychoeducation, information about resources, validation and strategies for managing this difficult situation.

This group will cover issues such as:

  • How to get a loved one into treatment

  • Dealing with the anger, frustration, shame and chaos of living with an addict

  • Taking care of ourselves during this overwhelming situation

  • Identifying dual disorders since psychiatric problems go hand in hand with substance abuse problems

  • How to cope when family members not on the same page about treatment

  • Getting restraining orders or court orders when the addict is threatening the safety of the family

  • How to access additional community resources like Alanon and Alateen and Narcanon

Clientele: This group is open to all people 21 year and older who have a family member struggling with addictions.

About the group leaders: Donna Cohen, MSW, has 40 years of experience in the mental health and addiction field. She has co-led many groups in dual disorders, family members of addicts, and addicts recovering from substance abuse at the Montreal General Hospital. Karen Louis M.Ed. C.C.C. has been working with individuals, couples and families for 20 years with the aim of promoting client growth, flexibility and resilience. Karen works with addiction, anxiety, eating disorders as well as a wide range of other concerns and issues.

This is an ongoing group: $20 per session, per person. Register at any time to start attending weekly.
