Event Details

The premise:  take 24 healthy male college students on summer break.  Pay them $15 a day (in 1971 dollars) to hole up in the basement of Stanford's Jordan Hall.   Randomly assign roles as guards or prisoners.   Set up the videocassette recorders and cameras.

What happens next might surprise you.

This Sundance-winning film offers an opportunity to think about how we behave at work.

  • What's our role in creating or supporting our culture at work?
  • How do our given roles shape how others see us, and treat us?
  • What will we do to please authority figures?
  • When have we been prisoners -- and when have we been guards?
  • What about surveillance?

Our low-key screening of the film will be followed by 20 minutes or so of structured discussion/Q&A.  There will be time to socialize after that.   Casual food and drink will be available, too.

Seats are limited; therefore, no refunds.   (Yes, the film has disturbing moments.)

(Dear Cinephiles, Orbital is a charming LES tenement building-slash-office space:  this will not be a screening room experience.  And, yes, this will be an authorized screening.  I'm contracting with IFC Films for permissions:  everything's on the up and up!)
