MoveCity: Designing a City that Moves You (for middle school and high schoo...
The field of transportation planning plays a role in our everyday lives―from how we travel to how goods are transported and the infrastructure we rely on to make these movements possible. Join us to learn about the world of transportation planning and become a transportation planner for the day! Students will engage in a mock charrette, where they will design their own city, including its multimodal transportation system (skateboard routes and hoverboard lanes welcome). Working in groups with a professional transportation planner, students will map out their city using markers and other materials. Challenges, such as stringent environmental and zoning standards, and moratoria on hoverboards may come up during the exercise. Each group will then have the opportunity to present their design for MoveCity. In addition to having fun, at the end of the exercise, students will gain:
A better understanding of transportation planning;
A better understanding of transportation challenges and opportunities;
Awareness of community-based planning techniques, such as design charrettes;
A better understanding of the development process, including zoning and environmental permitting;
An opportunity to develop teamwork and collaboration skills; and
An opportunity to develop public speaking skills.
Event size: 25 children
Security Procedures: Adults must provide a valid photo identification (i.e. driver's license, passport) to enter the building. Students should bring a school identification card or driver’s license if available. Please minimize the number of bags, and backpacks to help expedite the security process.
