Event description
Chapel Lecture - Mourning Customs: Comparing the Victorian Era With The Digital Age

About this Event

When a death occurs in our society, rituals that are practiced and methods of final disposition vary significantly. This presentation will compare and contrast mourning rituals (jewelry, clothing, post-mortem photographs) from earlier times in history, particularly the Victorian era, with those occurring today (memorial tattoos, spontaneous memorials, online commemoration). Options for final disposition, the role of cemeteries, and factors influencing one’s choices will be discussed.

Carla Sofka, Professor of Social Work at Siena College and ARC Trustee, will present this talk in the Chapel at Historic Albany Rural Cemetery on Saturday, October 19 at 1:00 pm. Admission is free, but we will ask you to RSVP via Eventbrite as seating in the Chapel is limited.
