Traveling to the Workshop: Whether you are coming by car or train to the workshop, after arriving in Grindelwald - you'll need to either hike up to the Berggasthaus First, or take the Gondola from Gridelwald to First. For those coming by car, you'll need to park in Grindelwald. Be careful that you park in a designated are where multi-night parking is permitted.
Weather: This course takes place in a mountain environment. September is often a beautiful month in Switzerland - but conditions can vary widely. It can be chilly - especially early in the morning and late in the evening - when we'll be shooting. Please prepare for a range of weather conditions and check the forecast before packing your bags.
Must haves: rain jacket, long pants, warm pullover, hat, sunglasses and shorts. With any luck we'll have terrific weather, but please pack clothing which will keep you comfortable in a variety of conditions. Comfortable, rugged footwear is a must.
Costs: Your registration fee includes the costs of your accomodation (dorm style rooms), and meals during the workshop (Friday evening through Sunday midday). The availability of private rooms is extremely limited. Please contact us directly if you would like us to inquire for you.
Food & Dietary Considerations: The Lodge has a restauant which provides the type of good, basic meals that one expects at mountain lodges in Switzerland. Those with special dietary needs should get in touch with us early so we can advise the Hotel staff ahead of time on how to accomodate your diet.
Camera Equipment: While it’s not necessary to arrive with an arsenal of cameras and lenses, it’s recommended that your lens (or lenses) cover a range of focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto. A DSLR type camera is the most appropriate camera format for this type of project. A “speedlight” (external flash) is not absolutely necessary but is recommended for photographing in low light situations and for using outdoors to fill in the sun's harsh shadows. A sturdy tripod could come in handy as well if you wish to photograph at sunrise and sunset. Too much camera gear will weigh you down, so please consider that we will be on the move constantly. It will amaze you how little camera equipment Dan and Janine use on their photo shoots. It's not what you own, it's how you put it to use.
Note: It’s highly recommended that you have backup batteries for your camera as well as extra memory cards. We will not be providing computers for image editing, so bring along your own laptop if you wish. Make sure you have a way to get your images onto your computer as well. A card reader which can be connected w/ USB or a cable which connects your camera to your laptop will do the trick. There will be no internet connection at the Lodge, though you may be able to connect via mobile phone.
A course reminder and further information will be sent out in the weeks before the course dates. In the meantime, please feel free to get in touch with any questions that you may have. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you in Grindelwald!
