Event description

Description

If you enjoy spending time in nature and being outdoors, and you look forward to giving back to the community, promoting conservation and stewardship, as well as sharing your knowledge with others, you are the perfect person to join our docent team at Mount Tamalpais State Park!

Docents help visitors appreciate and protect our beautiful mountain. After a staff-led training in the natural and cultural resources of the park, docents will perfect their skills by shadowing other docents and develop their own programs based on their interests. After the training, docents sign up for shifts at visitor center and/or to lead hikes, guided walks, and other interpretive programs.

We are recruiting volunteers for a training starting at the end of September. Class schedule is as follow:

Sept 30, 9am-12pm - Interpretive Training for Museum/Visitor Center Docents (optional for hike docents) - includes practical demos on VC/museum interp activities such as table talks, using props, roving, etc.

Oct 14, 9am-2pm - Interpretive Training for Hike Docents (optional for Museum/Visitor Center Docents) - includes guided walk

Oct 21, 9am-2pm - Mount Tamalpais Cultural and Natural Resources Training (for both Museum/VC and Hike Docents) - a discussion on the geology, hydrology, ecology and cultural history of Mt Tam

The training is limited to 25 participants. A detailed class syllabus will be sent to all those who are accepted.

Submitting an application is required for all prospective docents. A phone or in-person interview is usually in place before admittance to the program. The online application form can be found on our web page. For more information, call the Pantoll Ranger Station at (415) 388-3653 and ask for Park Interpreter Rosanna.
