Motivational Interviewing Series 6

Brief Description of Workshop

Reframing the concept of “client resistance” to “conversational discord”

*Emphasis is on how to get conversations back to mutual focus when motivations have become “mismatched” between provider and client

*4 techniques for diminishing discord are each practiced with experiential exercises in this workshop.

*Reference to conversational management approaches that prevent dissonance will be emphasized throughout the workshop.

NOTE: Completion of Component 1 and 2 are requirements for this workshop. *Involves very brief review of key concepts and skills in reflective listening (1 hour)

 *Remainder of workshop involves skill development around:

 a) when to use, and hoe to compose simple reflections

 b) when to use, and how to compose complex reflections

 c) practice with each of four types of complex reflections

d) adjusting your question and reflection ratio

Facilitator: Paul Burke - after a 22 year career in addictions and mental health counselling, supervision, management and training positions, Paul developed a private consulting agency through which he helps organizations to develop capacity for expanding Motivational Interviewing competency. Paul is a member of the MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers). He is highly regarded as an MI trainer in Canada and has been selected twice, as a lead trainer in the annual international MINT training-for-trainers program. Paul has extensive experience in providing MI training in the context of addiction and mental health, street outreach and homelessness, and in health education and intervention.

Paul has facilitated M.I. workshops for more than 5000 people across Canada in the last nine years and has delivered more than 300 workshops, including introductory and advanced workshops, and specialized courses to enhance development of MI Supervision and Peer Coaching.
