Description

Training Length: 6 hours

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative person-centered counseling method for addressing the common problems of ambivalence about change. This session is designed to teach participants about the overall spirit and style of MI and the concepts of OARS, Change Talk, Sustain Talk, and DARNCAT. This 6-hour session will provide multiple activities where participants will learn how to use OARS (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective Listening and Summarizing) as it relates to change talk, sustain talk, and the MI flow of engaging, focusing, evoking and planning. It includes practice case studies focusing on SMI and SUD that discusses the effectiveness, general principles, and skills used in Motivational Interviewing. This training will address the following objectives:

  • Define motivational interviewing (MI) spirit, including:
  • Listing the three definitions of MI.
  • Interpreting four key components to the MI spirit: partnership, acceptance, compassion and evocation.
  • Explain and use core interviewing skills of OARS - open questions, affirming, reflecting and summarizing.
  • Describe the flow of MI: engaging, focusing, evoking and planning.
  • Define motivation, ambivalence, sustain talk and discord. Identify how the concepts relate to the stages of change and the flow of MI.
  • Define change talk and the concepts of: DARNCAT - desire, ability, reason and need; commitment, activation and taking steps; and instilling discrepancies.
