Motivational Interviewing Basics for Recovery Coaches

Description of Presentation: This one day training will provide participants with an introduction to the evidence practice method of communication – motivational interviewing (MI). After orientation to the underlying spirit and principles of MI, practical exercises help participants to strengthen empathy skills, recognize client change talk, and roll with discord/resistance and gain an understanding of MI Technique OAR. The use of client assessment feedback in MI is explained. Research evidence is reviewed for the efficacy of MI and for the importance of the worker and the client relationship in positive outcomes.

Goals & Objectives: Participants will be able to: Describe four aspects of the spirit of motivational interviewing; Gain an understanding of MI Technique OAR. Recognize the ability to respond to clients with empathic reflective statements; Identify change talk within a person’s speech; Generate empathic reflections and open questions designed to elicit change talk; and
Provide an effective, empathic summary statement.

Lead Presenter: Ginger Ross - Ginger, a native from NH, was trained at the CCAR Academy in March of 2015 by Jim Wuelfing (developer of the CCAR model) and is also certified to train the Connect Suicide Prevention Training, as well as a trainer for the CCAR 2 day Ethics for Recovery Coaches. Identifying the need for an HIV training, to help folks meet the CRSW requirements for NH, Ginger researched and developed an HIV/AIDS training for Recovery Support Workers. Ginger received her CRSW credential in May, 2017 and is a recent graduate of SNHU with a BA in Forensic Psychology. She sits on the Governor's Recovery Task Force. Ginger is a strong advocate for the recovery community and works hand in hand with recovery support workers to ensure they receive the appropriate training necessary to best serve the recovery community. Ginger is the owner/founder of NH Recovery Coach Academy. Ginger has recently been trained under MINT Trainer Stephen Andrews for Motivational Interviewing.
