  • Video demonstrations
  • Role plays
  • “Real plays”
  • Small group exercises
  • Group discussion

Attendees are encouraged to reflect on their experiences with patients as well as their own personal change process to understand what works and what does not when it comes to helping people change.

How this workshop will help you in your work:

  • Do you have patients who can’t seem to make a positive change in their lives and are stuck in the same story?
  • Do you feel like you’re experiencing the same conversation with your patients each time you see them?
  • Would you like to be able to have a different kind of change conversation?
  • Stop wasting time on strategies that don’t help patients to change
  • Feel more confident about working alongside patients who ‘don’t want to change’
  • Prevent burn out by getting clearer on what is your job and what is your patient’s job

You will learn how to:

  • Identify from experience roadblocks to facilitating patient change
  • Describe and demonstrate the ‘Spirit’ of Motivational Interviewing (MI).
  • Roll with resistance with patients who are ambivalent about change.
  • Identify the back story of what patients may not be telling you.
  • Identify and practice the micro-skills of MI.
  • Practice simple and complex reflections.
  • Practice skills to recognize, elicit, and reinforce “change talk”.
  • Recognize and identify MI skills through real plays.
  • Advance current MI skills with focus on reducing patient resistance to changing behavior.
  • Practice combining MI Spirit and Skills in a real-life behavior change conversations
  • Reflect on your current practice and develop a personalized plan to support your ongoing MI skill development
