Event description


Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person-centered intervention style aimed at resolving ambivalence about change. MI can also be described as a collaborative 'conversation' style for strengthening a person's own motivation and committment to change.

Participants will explore what can motivate a client to change and factors need to be present for effective motivational intervention.

Stages of pre-contemplation; styles of MI and the clinical use of descrepancy as a change agent will be discussed.

Therapeutic guiding principles of MI will be reviewed within the scope of clinical practice through use of case vignettes.

Participants participating in this program will be able to:

* Names stages of the Transtheoretical Model of Change

* Identify idicators that a client is ready to change.

* Describe three styles of therapeutic communication when using Motivational Interviewing

* List core skills of the OARS approach

* Identify competency benchmarks for clinical supervision or self assessment.

Live Workshop Continuing Education Credit Information:

Full attendance is required: no partial credits will be offered for partial attendance.

New York Social Workers: The HDRT Group is recognized by the New York State Education Department's (NYSED) State Board for Social Work as a conditionally* approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers # 0301. This activity will qualify for 1.5 (clinical) contact hours.

* Conditional approval still gives the HDRT Group full ability to provide CEU credits for this program.

Social Workers: The HDRT Group, Provider # 1445, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) Program. ASWB Approval Period ( 6/08/15-6/08/16). Social Workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits. Social Workers participating in this course will receive 1.5 (clinical) continuing education clock hours.

Case Managers: This program has been pre-approved by the Commission for Case Manager Certification to provide continuing education credit to Certified Care Managers (CCMs). CCMs participating in this course will receive 1.5 continuing education clock hours.

Certificates of course completion will be individually distributed at the end of the workshop, and the submission of workshop evaluation form. Certificates must be sign by participants at the time of receipt.

About the Instructor:

Anne B. Pagano, LCSW, ACSW, BCD, C-ASWCM, is the Executive Director of the Hoarding Disorder Resource and Training Group, Inc. She has over 30 years' experience in direct clinical services, supervision, administration and education in hospitals and long term care facilities. Anne was an adjunct professor at the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services for 9 years. She holds a Master's in Social Work from Simmons College of Social Work in Boston and a Post-Master's Certificate in Gerontology from the Hunter-Brookdale Center on Aging in New York City.
