INTRODUCTION

This advanced Motivational Interviewing skills training defines, demonstrates and practices MI skill and spirit with interactive exercises. Participants will practice MI with advanced directional interventions. This training will elicit the strengths and needs of participants and provide interactive practice activities to build MI skill and confidence.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify a personal working definition of Motivational Interviewing
  • List 4 advanced reflective listening skills
  • Describe 5 roadblocks to active listening
  • Examine the four processes of Motivational Interviewing
  • Apply advanced MI skills of co-constructing a narrative
  • Use value sort cards to explore personal values and develop discrepancies between values and behavior

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This event is sponsored by the adult mental health block grant and is intended for persons who serve adults through the mental health and substance abuse provider network in the state of Michigan. Attendees are required to take the 2-Day Motivational Interviewing Basic Skills Training prior to attending Motivational Interviewing Advanced Skills Training. Clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, supports coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, and any other practitioners at the intermediate or advanced level of practice.

PRESENTER

Randy Estes, LMSW, CAADC, CCS, Clinical Manager, Skywood Recovery Center, Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)

Randy is a licensed master social worker and certified advanced addiction counselor providing mental health and substance abuse therapy at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, Kalamazoo, MI. Prior to Pine Rest, Randy provided mental health and substance abuse services since 1999 for Mercy Network, Rose Hill Center, Community Network Services, InterAct of Michigan and Foundations Recovery Network.

Randy earned his Bachelor of Science in Mortuary Science and Master of Social Work from Wayne State University, Detroit. He joined the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2010.

Providing Motivational Interviewing Training on a National and State level since 2008, Randy also works as a fulltime therapist with adults, children and adolescents. His primary areas of expertise include substance use and other compulsive addictive behaviors (gambling, sex and pornography, etc.), depression and bipolar depression (mood disorders), anxiety, PTSD, and thought disorders including severe and persistent mental illness. Randy has a strong interest in grief and loss, forgiveness, shame and guilt, and recovery issues related to compulsive addictive behaviors.

Day 1 Advanced Motivational Interviewing

8:30-9:00 AM Registration for 2-day Advanced MI Training

9:00-9:30 AM Welcome/Introduction, input from previous Basic MI training, list priorities and needs of the group. Elicit-Provide-Elicit

9:30-10:00 AM Active listening, listening exercise dyad, Gordon’s Theory of active listening, group process, demonstration, listening road block exercise

10:00-10:30 AM MI as a continuum of communication styles; directing-guiding-following as a dynamic continuum of conversation styles, demonstrate and group processing communication styles.

Break

10:45-11:00 AM The spirit of MI, provide information from MI-3 and elicit group processing, feed back, and concerns about practice applications, spirit demonstration

11:00-11:30 AM MI demonstration video, group process observations, questions, and application challenges.

11:30 AM-12:00 PM Review MI micro skills; open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries (OARS), open questions exercise dyad, group process

12:00-1:00 PM Lunch (included)

1:00 PM -1:30 PM Agenda mapping presented. MI demonstration putting it all together group interview, group process observations, questions, and application challenges.

1:30-2:00 PM Putting it all together diad with MI roadmap and agenda map.

2:00-2:30 PM Confrontation and personal values examined

Day 2 Advanced Motivational Interviewing

9:30-10:00 AM Complex reflections, strategies for a broad range of reflections

10:00-10:30 AM Change talk, view MI demonstration video, group exercise counting change statement in the demonstration video

10:45-11:00 AM Practice thumbs up/thumbs down for MI adherent and non-adherent responses

11:00-11:30 AM Application of identified personal values with self-confrontation in behavior change

11:30 AM-12:00 PM Focusing; with agenda maps explore possible scenarios for focusing exercise dyad, group process, group exercise expanding variations on reflections.

12:00-1:00 PM Lunch (included)

1:00 PM -1:30 PM MI demonstration video, review style, spirit, and OARS, process observations from video, expand agenda maps and incorporate personal values from values sort exercise

1:30-2:00 PM Review affirmations based on accurate empathy and introduce affirmation exercise for end of the day. Practice thumbs up/thumbs down for MI adherent and non-adherent responses

2:00-2:30 PM Review reflections, demonstrate reflections, group process and reflections practice exercise, reflections exercise dyad. Practice thumbs up/thumbs down for MI adherent and non-adherent responses

2:45-3:00 PM Practice thumbs up/thumbs down for MI adherent and non-adherent responses

3:00-3:30 PM Introduce and start second VASE-R assessment

3:30-4:00 PM Complete VASE-R. Final Affirmation dyad, group process accurate affirmations from empathic listening, final development of personal working definition of MI. Discuss development plan for sustaining EBP at the agency level, continued performance improvement and practical applications of MI
