Description

Influence behavior change that lasts with this cutting-edge technique - Motivational Interviewing!

What is Motivational Interviewing? A counseling method which helps people resolve ambivalent feelings to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior. People are given space and guidance to consider the issues and make up their own minds on the subject.

This is a short-term, practical and empathetic approach. Motivational interviewing has been used since the 1980s as a technique to help clients recover from alcohol addiction. It has proven successful in treating a wide range of challenges from gambling to dietary changes, and the method has more recently been applied to transportation, helping travelers break the habit of driving alone and strengthen habits of using alternate travel modes. CityLab evaluated travel behavior change in the U.K. back in 2014. Click here to read more about their success.

Movability’s 2-day training will teach Motivational Interviewing through the lens of personal travel planning and commuting behavior change. However, the Motivational Interview approach can be applied to a broad range of behavior change initiatives, used in one-to-one interactions as well as program design and digital communications.

In this unique, hands-on training, you will learn:

  • The Spirit of Motivational Interviewing
  • Collaboration between Travel Advisors and Participants
  • Exploration rather than Persuasion
  • The Main Guiding Principle of Evocation
  • How to Apply Motivational Interviewing to your Mobility, Sustainability, or Other Programs

We have a limited number of seats offered at cost to provide other transportation and sustainability professionals the chance to integrate this highly effective behavior change approach into their programs. This is a 2-day training on Tuesday, December 5th and Wednesday, December 6th; 8:30 AM-5:00PM. Click here to download a printable flyer. If you are a curent Movability Austin member, please contact Alex Houston to receive your discount code.

Alix Scarborough is the Membership Program Manager and resident behavior change expert at Movability Austin. She has been practicing and training others in Motivational Interviewing, and she managed the Do More: Transform your Trip grant program, coordinating 16 travel advisors to engage over 1,300 commuters in motivational interview “commute chats.”
