Picture this. It’s a Monday morning and I’m leaving Starbucks. Having enjoyed a grande cappuccino, I’m energized and ready to take on the day.
As I’m walking out, I spot a friend I haven’t seen for quite some time sitting at a corner table engaged in conversation. As we catch each other’s eye, she waves – inviting me over.
After exchanging hugs, she introduces me. We chat a bit, then one of her friends asks me what I do. It’s a question each of us are presented with on a regular basis. It’s engrained in our culture.
For years, my usual response was, “I produce a show for creatives in the motion picture and broadcast industries”. I’m sure you have your own standby response:
- I’m a motion graphics artist.
- I’m a filmmaker.
- I’m a visual effects artist.
- I’m an animator.
But the truth is, each of us is so much more than that. We’re not just a title…we’re unique individuals. We are creatives.
So now when asked what I do, I respond, “I create”. It’s amazing the conversations that are sparked by these two simple words. It opens the door to talk about what fuels you – to share your creative passion.
That’s what motion is all about.
motion takes you on a mind-bending three day ride – what we refer to as the TED talks of our industry. Filmed in front of an intimate studio audience, each speaker is on stage for 18 minutes sharing their unique perspective on subjects they’re passionate about. Innovative ideas that revitalize the creative muse.
Talks that // feed your creative brain //.
Intimacy is an integral part of what makes motion a unique experience. I’m sure you’ve been to your share of large conferences where you're shuffled from session to session, picking up a few tips and techniques along the way. For newbs in the industry, this may be all you need. But for pros with years of experience, there's got to be more. Sure – you’ll pick up techniques as you watch pros breakdown projects they’ve created specifically for motion. You'll also get a glimpse into how their creative minds work, which in turn – sparks your creativity. But by limiting the number of creatives who attend motion, we provide you with an experience like none other. When you engage in the interactive discussions at motion, you’re not just another anonymous person in the room. Instead, you feel like you’re part of an intimate discussion among peers.
But it doesn’t stop there. Year after year, motion attendees consistently cite the intimacy of the event as one of its most valuable assets. I love reading stories from attendees who were elated to have shared conversation over lunch with a top creative director in the motion picture industry. Or that through networking at motion, they picked up freelance gigs from studios they never dreamed possible. Many attendees establish life long relationships that were ignited during their motion experience. These are tangible takeaways – added values that can only be achieved in an intimate environment. This is the motion experience.
So, what can you expect at motion?
From engaging 18 minute talks and intriguing interviews, to project breakdowns and interactive discussions, motion approaches creativity like none other. Of course, motion is far from ordinary. Beyond talks and breakdowns, you’ll also experience unique events like our annual FACEOFF: The After Effects Challenge, where three artists go face-to-face to create a motion graphics project live on stage in 60 minutes. Or our annual Exquisite Corpse Project led by Michael Waldron, Creative Director at TV Land. Plus now, the added experience of Currents The International New Media Festival. And yes – evening events parties are also part of the motion experience. One each night!
As creatives working in the industry, we've designed motion based on what we’d like to experience at a professional event. We came up with a unique show designed specifically for working pros. Now in our 9th year, we think we’ve done a pretty good job.
I invite you to experience motion. I look forward to meeting you this June at motion 2015!

Our mission: to explore innovative thoughts, to seek out creative minds and new inspirations, to boldly go where no creative has gone before.
And for the past eight years, we’ve done just that – providing online content for creatives in the motion picture and broadcast industries on motion.tv, streaming live shows like the FACEOFF: The After Effects Challenge and the Made with After Effects Awards, and most importantly, giving birth to motion...a place where people – not unlike ourselves – can come together each year and celebrate who we are: creatives.
