Description

The Workshop:

In this darbuka/doumbek workshop Raquy Danziger will teach you the basics of the Turkish Split Hand Technique as well as incorporating Middle Eastern rhythm patterns in your drumming.

The Turkish Split Hand Technique is a darbuka style that has emerged in Turkey in the last 20 years. Drummers split the hand into two, like in Indian tabla playing, attaining incredible speed and dexterity. Raquy has lived in Istanbul for the past several years learning this style and practicing with master drummers. Raquy will explain the basics of this incredible technique - hand positions, great exercises - and we will play some cool Turkish rhythms.

This is an ALL-LEVELS workshop. A darbuka or dumbek is recommended but any hand drummer is welcome to attend.

After the workshop there will be a short break followed by a one hour performance with Raquy and her band, DÜM.

The Show: Raquy Danziger's Düm Rhythm Celebration

This electrifying show features Turkish style darbuka/dumbek drumming. The ensemble performs intricate and dazzling compositions comprised of rhythms from Turkey, Egypt, Iran and India as well as funk, samba and hip hop beats. A treat for the eyes as well as the ears, this show is carefully choreographed with many theatrical elements, tap dancing and some audience participation. Also, introducing Middle Eastern Tap Dancing!

In addition to the drumming pieces, the show includes Raquy’s dreamy melodic pieces. In these songs Raquy plays the mystical 12 – stringed King Kemenche Tarhu, a futuristic version of the Persian spike fiddle.
