Description
The Film Screening
For most of the last century, entry-level jobs were plentiful, and college was an affordable path to a fulfilling career. That world no longer exists. The feature-length documentary Most Likely to Succeed examines the history of education, revealing the growing shortcomings of our school model in todayʼs innovative world. Directed by acclaimed documentarian Greg Whiteley, the film has been named “among the best edu-documentaries ever produced” by Education Week, and called a “smart and engaging look at education in the 21st century” by The Hollywood Reporter. Film Threat stated that “this film should be a required course for all parents and educators.” Most Likely To Succeed is an official selection of many of North America's top film festivals, including the prestigious 2015 Sundance Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival.
*Note: the film is 89 minutes in length and contains one instance of profanity (the phrase "BS").
The Fundraiser
An enthusiastic group of 8 students in their second year of the Bachelor of Education Program (Elementary Curriculum) will be travelling across the globe to complete their 3 week practicum this May! They will be the fifth generation of University students to instruct in Ulamba, and the first to visit Seme, which are villages close to Kisumu, Kenya. They hope to continue the tradition of improving the school and community in any way they can. The goal is to raise $10,000 through fundraising, all of which will be used entirely for the community member’s well-being and improving their resources. All profits from this film screening will go towards helping the women achieve this goal.
Post Film
After the film finishes at 8:15, time, space, and a discussion guide will be provided for those who wish to linger and chat. This portion of the evening is completely optional but encouraged! Want to keep that conversation rolling? There is also an EdCampWest event happening April 3rd at the University of Victoria. See https://edcampwest.wordpress.com/ for more information about that event.
