Event description

Description

This years's conference will explore the current wave of women's empowerment and how it's been historically reflected in books. We will specifically explore the #MeToo movement and how women such as bell hooks, Tarana Burke and the founders of Black Lives Matter continue to hack at patriarchy.

This year the conference will examine ways in which the intersection of literature, activism, and women's empowerment have converged to broaden a movement that seeks as it's goal a true equality of all genders. To this extent, the conference will continue its commitment to local education, social engagement, and literature but through the female gaze of such fiction and nonfiction writers as Elizabeth Acevedo, June Jordan, Nicole Dennis-Benn, Zinzi Clemmons, Stacey Patton, Angela Flournoy, and others.

The conference will invite community organizations with a strong focus on empowering young women and teens to develop and present panels, workshops, and film focused on female and black identity and media representation. MLC2018 will also be informed by escalating media narratives that continue to address issues such as the #metoo movement and Time magazine's person of the year "The Silence Breakers." And how this community-based examination of equal rights can build toward a more perfect union. Potential participating organizations include Bronx Museum of the Arts, Black Girl Project, Laundromat Project, NYPL, among others. This year, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, which has served as venue partner for the past three years, will play a stronger role by using its education department's teacher directory to better market, develop audience, and complement program selection and development.

The Mosaic Literary Conference is a grassroots event and a great opportunity for the Bronx and New York City communities of educators, students, program administrators, and parents to learn ways to integrate books and reading into the lives of teenagers. MLC offers a mix of informative programs and creative workshops to engage young minds, strengthen literacy, and develop education strategies.
