The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training and the Friends of NCPTT will be offering a workshop on mortar analysis on August 12-14 at Lee H. Nelson Hall in Natchitoches, Louisiana. This workshop is designed for preservation professionals and will consist of classroom lectures and hands-on sessions.
We will review the various mortar types (lime, clay, Natural Cement, and Portland cement), curing mechanisms, deterioration processes and replacement mortars. During the hands-on session each participant will get the opportunity to examine a mortar sample and break down the components. We will also discuss interpreting the result data and making recommendations for repointing mortars. More in-depth testing methods will be also be discussed and recommendations for when they may be necessary.
Registration for the workshop will be $400 and space is limited so please reserve your spot early.
Fran Gale, Director of the Architectural Conservation Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin, will be instructing this course.
