Setting is an often overlooked aspect of any genre. Why? Because it's typically described as just "place" or "texture." But really, setting is a crucial element of writing. A truly great setting is a complex collection of place, time, and culture that operates under a very specific set of rules. Those rules dictate what’s possible for characters and narrators to say, think, and even beand the best narratives help readers understand these rules implicitly and passively. Our primary goal is to find techniques we can apply to our own projects, so we'll explore settings from a broad range of texts—great examples and bad ones, complex and simple, real and imagined. We'll work out how effective rules are introduced to the reader and find the best ways to break them in the name of drama. All genres and experience levels are more than welcome.
