Event description

Description

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder), excoriation (skin picking), and onychophagia (nail biting), affect millions of people worldwide and can result in significant personal distress.

As part of BFRB Awareness Week in October 1-7, 2018, the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health and The TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors are hosting a free BFRB Community Night to connect children, teens, adults, families, and providers interested in learning about appropriate care and local support.

This workshop will provide an overview of BFRBs and their treatment and will highlight recent research findings. Experts from both NYU Langone Health and The TLC Foundation will answer questions and guide individuals toward finding appropriate care and support for managing these conditions.

There will also be opportunities to learn about local support groups, meet cosmetologists specializing in serving BFRBs, and to interact with others with common interests and concerns, including:

  • Tics, Tourette Disorder, and Trichotillomania Program, Child Study Center
  • The TLC Foundation for BFRBs
  • New York City Peer Support Group
  • Lucinda Ellery Studio
  • Charlene Blacer, The Secret Mane
  • Bianca Lyder, New Horizons Hair
  • and more
