Event description

Description

Since 2007, the Montgomery County History Conference has been a venue for people of all ages and backgrounds—civic leaders, students, museum professionals and volunteers, history buffs, genealogists, and the general public—to explore and celebrate the many facets of our past that shape our community to this day. Hosted annually by Montgomery History, this day-long gathering includes workshops, presentations, and panel discussions covering a wide range of topics within the realm of local history.

This year’s conference promises to be another can’t-miss event with something for everyone. This year’s conference will open with former Washington Post writer Eugene Meyer providing a provocative talk, “Postbellum Montgomery: Coming to Terms with our Southern Past.” This will be followed by breakout sessions featuring wide-ranging topics such as the recent archaeological discovery at Manassas National Battlefield Park, new discoveries along the Underground Railroad, local historic cemeteries, the 1950's housing boom in Montgomery County, and a look into the intriguing life of Dr. Webster Sewell.

Later in the day, there are many exciting sessions to choose from. “History Tools” will provide you with the knowledge to preserve your family papers and photographs and students from Rockville High School will share their personal stories of family immigration to Montgomery County. Other topics include the "farmerettes" and suffragettes on the homefront during World War I, the local River Road community from 1850 to 1963, and the history of Reed Brothers Dodge.

The final session will be a special treat for jazz and music lovers of all ages as we discuss jazz in the Mid-Atlantic and Montgomery County with Regennia N. Williams and enjoy a special performance by the Diego Nava Jazz Trio.

If you have questions, please call Montgomery History at 301-340-2825 and visit us online at MontgomeryHistory.org/HistoryConference2019.

Registration to open November 2018.
