Description

The Monocle presents Monstrous Movie Nights on Tuesdays in October highlighting 80s Horror Movies. Each Tuesday Andrew Wyatt, a local film critic and movie buff, will present a double featured based on a weekly theme. NO COVER!!! Popcorn and other snacks will be available to purchase as well as spooky specials!

October 3 (Creepy Killers)

My Bloody Valentine (1981, Canada, dir. by George Mihalka)

In the mining town of Valentine Bluffs, a killer with a mining pick and a penchant for human hearts is on loose, preying on the locals who would dare to reinstate the town’s long-banned Valentine’s Day dance.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984, USA, dir. by Wes Craven)

The teenagers of Springwood are plagued by nightmares of a razor-fingered fiend--nightmares that can turn very real and deadly. The town’s darkest secret has returned, but how can you stop a killer who lives only in dreams?

October 10 (Vampires and Werewolves)

Near Dark (1987, USA, dir. by Kathryn Bigelow)

In this gory, neo-Western riff on the vampire film, a young man is transformed into an undead bloodsucker by a pack of RV-driving outlaw vampires, who maraud across the American Southwest in search of human prey.

An American Werewolf in London (1981, UK / USA, dir. by John Landis)

A blackly comedic take on the werewolf picture, with transformation effects that are still jaw-dropping. A hapless American is bitten by a moor-prowling lycanthrope and gradually succumbs to the beast within.

October 17 (The Restless Dead)

Poltergeist (1982, USA, dir. by Tobe Hooper)

A suburban family’s new tract home is overtaken by violent undead spirits intent on claiming their young daughter for their own. Evil televisions, evil clowns, evil trees, evil closets, and evil everything ensue.

Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (1987, USA, dir. By Sam Raimi)

An over-the-top, darkly comic sequel to the indie horror cult classic, this relentless, madcap tale features cannibal undead, demonic possession, Satanic rituals, an unholy book, and one iconic chainsaw.

October 24 (Bloody and Disgusting)

Hellraiser (1987, UK, dir. by Clive Barker)

Horror master Clive Barker directs the nightmarish adaptation of his novella The Hellbound Heart. A fugitive from hell needs victims so that he can restore his humanity, but the unholy bureaucrats of suffering aren't having it.

The Thing (1982, USA, dir. by John Carpenter)

A malevolent entity with the power to imitate any living thing invades an Antarctic research station and wreaks bloody havoc. Featuring some of the most shocking and grotesque practical effects in history.
