Calling all social currency innovators, advocates and researchers in South East Asia and Australasia to a one day gathering for generating new paths to massive scaling.
"The Money and Society Summit: Building the Credit Commons" is a free unconference to learn and plan together. Participants from South East Asia and Australasia will develop ideas for future activities that maximise the positive societal impacts of complementary currency innovation.
The event is facilitated by Professor Jem Bendell with expert contributions from complementary currency experts Matthew Slater (Community Forge), Stephen DeMeulenaere (Coin Academy) and Annette Loudon (Community Exchange Systems Australia).
Why Bali? In the last 5 years the island has attracted a lot of "digital nomads" who think and work creatively at the forefront of technological and social trends. That is reflected in the notoriety of Bitcoin in the town of Ubud. These nomads will provide the summit with a basis of an international and technologically aware participant group. Bali is also extremely well connected in the region, with budget flights to major cities. The backdrop of tropical nature can help stimulate a different type of conversation than in corporate settings.
This event is an entirely non commercial voluntary activity. No fees for participants or payments to the convenors. You are responsible for your own travel, accommodation, sustenance, health, visas, insurance and logistics. Please take note that none of the convenors will aid with any of those matters prior or during the event. The venue is the stunning Bali Spirit Hotel and Spa (info below). It will be in the Panestanan area of Ubud.
Key questions that can be explored using the Open Space Technology format:
- Technological opportunities and challenges for scaling complementary currencies
- Governance practices to enable scaling
- Resilience of complementary currencies to shocks from politics, economics or climate
- Gaining support from policy makers and donors
- Pros, cons and best practices in relationships with private enterprise and venture capital
- Promoting the Credit Commons as both idea and infrastructure
We strongly advise participants to complete the free online Money and Society MOOC by IFLAS and Community Forge before attending. This starts on August 21st and involves a few hours study per week for 4 weeks. Register here.
