Event Details

In 722 B.C. the northern kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrian Empire after a three-year siege, and the Jewish survivors were taken captive and dispersed throughout Assyria. Then, the Assyrian Empire fell to Babylon at the battle of Carchemish in 605 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon then attacked the southern kingdom of Judah in three waves: 605, 597 and 588 B.C. The third and final attack led to a two-year siege of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem fell in the summer of 586 B.C. The Babylonians destroyed the temple, burnt the city and took the survivors captive to Babylon. That began the "Babylonian Captivity."
In 539 B.C. Cyrus the great king of Persia conquered Babylon, and Cyrus allowed all the people taken captive by Assyria and Babylon (not just the Jews, but all others, as well) to go home, rebuild their temples, cities and infrastructures--and Cyrus footed the bill!
In Scripture, this "return from captivity" is recounted in Ezra and Nehemiah (those who returned) and in Esther (the Jews who stayed behind in the now-Persian Empire).
The Babylonian Captivity was a disaster for the Jews, and we must ask why God allowed it to happen. The book of Job (one of the oldest books in Scripture) answers the question, "Why do bad things happen to good people." Job is placed in the Christian canon of Scripture, exactly where it should be to deal with this fundamental, profound question.
In this series, Dr. Creasy explores the "return from captivity" in all its aspects, including the hope of a brighter future for the Jews in the light of lessons learned.
