Embracing Scary: How Courage AND Fear Can Create Success, Melinda Garvey, Publisher, AW Media, Inc.

Melinda Garvey, founder of Austin Woman Magazine and ATXMAN Magazine never wanted to be an entrepreneur. She literally stumbled into her destiny and now spends a lot of time working with budding entrepreneurs to help them realize their dreams. One of the most important lessons she imparts is to “HAVE FEAR”. Being courageous is scary — you think “courageous” is a label that everyone would want, but with that label comes expectations and sometimes our first instinct is to back away from that responsibility. Melinda will share her personal journey and how “having fear” got her through some of the scariest times in her life and business.

One Mother’s Road to Success: Achieving Goals with Kids in Tow - Yasmin Diallo Turk, HOPE for Senegal

Since that day, she has never given up on pursuing her passions because of her kids- instead she has engaged them along the way! Today, she is the project director of HOPE for Senegal, PhD candidate, and mama of 2 (almost 3!) kiddos. Yasmin will inspire you with ideas on how to engage kids in giving, travelling abroad with little ones, her journey from GED to PhD and pursuing professional passions… all with a growing family in tow!

Glennon - founder of and author of Carry On, Warrior - will discuss how to lead a life, a family, a company, and a social movement without fear. She will discuss how to discover who we are so that we don’t become convinced that we are the roles we play. She will explore how to ensure that we are doing work we love so that we’re never afraid of success or failure. And she’ll teach us how to choose friends, partners and co-workers carefully — so that we don’t have to fear others’ genius and mistakes. Change the World by Being Yourself – Meredith Walker, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, Interviewed by Wendi Aarons of They're Not All Gems

Being yourself is about the hardest job in the world. And there are no days off. We are often told to just be ourselves, but what does that mean and how do we do it?

Being yourself means not always living up to the expectations other people have for you. There is always somebody out there willing to tell you who you should be. It is a challenge to be an authentic person in a world that is always more than eager to tell you to be somebody else.

Even in the honorable profession and role of motherhood, women still have to work to ignore those messages from all around us that say we have to be something more just to be enough. In this talk, Meredith and Wendi will discuss what we can do to flex our mental muscles, and know that we are enough right now.

We change the world by being ourselves, and being ourselves is a life long quest.

The Art of Transformation: From Struggling Single Mother to Accomplished Entrepreneur - Bridget Dunlap @bridgetdunlapTX

In February 2008, Bridget Dunlap, a single mother, opened Pearl Bar in Houston, Texas. With rapid success opening her first business (she paid her investors back in just four months), she had the foresight to sell Pearl Bar, and that same year moved from Houston to Austin with then, five year-old, Asher. Just a few months later, in April 2009, Dunlap opened Lustre Pearl, and in October, Bar 96. Bridget will tell the story of how her son Asher was the sole inspiration behind her enormous success and transformation from a single mother working three jobs into an accomplished entrepreneur who continues to prosper.

Bridget Dunlap is credited with transforming not just her world, but also the world of those around her. Dunlap brought her vision to Rainey Street and took risks that paved the way for others—it was Dunlap’s arrival, opening Lustre Pearl that launched the Rainey Street district into a thriving social destination. Rainey Street continues to grow, as does Dunlap’s vision. In 2013, she opened her first restaurant, Mettle, and in a few months she will open Container Bar and its accompanying food trailer, Thaitanium. In 2014, Dunlap’s second restaurant will also open. Everything is growing, including Asher, who in 2014 will turn eleven. During her Momcom talk, Dunlap will describe how she did it, how she keeps doing it, and how she shares her success as an entrepreneur and mother.
