modern quilt design
Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 9:00 AM - Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 12:00 PM (CDT)
Saturdays May 4, 11, and 18 from 9:00 a.m. - noon.
Learn to design and sew your own modern quilts with the help of teacher Betty Nowak and your own instincts! Students must be familiar with quilting basics, including how to use a rotary cutter and how to sew a quarter-inch seam.
Betty will lead the class in a fabric-selection and quilt-design process and teach several modern improv block techniques. Then students will incorporate these ideas into their very own one-of-a-kind quilts! Students are encouraged to bring pictures of nature, architecture, color combinations, and the like to serve as inspiration for quilt design. The series will also include instruction/demonstration of piecing the top, layering it with the backing and batting, making and sewing binding, attaching a hanging sleeve and label, and doing basic free-motion quilting.
Students will need to purchase batting as well as fabric for the quilt front, back, and binding in addition to the $60 workshop fee. Cost for materials will vary depending upon the size of each student's design. All materials can be purchased at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount.
Bring your own machine, or sign up early to reserve one of four shop machines.
