The Modern Funk Fest Presents a Dual Record Release Party for The Pendletons and Diamond Ortiz at El Cid on Saturday, December 3rd, 2016. The first large scale event of its kind, the Modern Funk Fest pulls together the best live acts, djs and labels focusing on the modern funk sound; giving full respect and admiration to the decades of funk/boogie music that has come before, while showcasing the newest sounds and sights to emerge from that scene. This event initially started in San Diego at the Til Two Club, with amazing performances, a perfect vibe, an ideal line-up and a night with a very receptive and hungry audience. After putting other notches in the MFF belt, most recently with a Funk Festival held at the Elbo Room in San Francisco, Modern Funk Fest Presents returns to LA with a celebration of the newest modern funk and modern soul with this dual record release party for The Pendletons and Diamond Ortiz.
Headlining the event are the Bay Area-based boogie-funk/modern soul group The Pendletons, a six-piece band performing a very rare live set in support of their forthcoming EP: Gotta Get Out, and Diamond Ortiz, formerly from the Bay Area, but now a Los Angeles resident, and a verteran talkbox/synth ruler; the crème de la crème of the current up and coming "Modern Funk" scene on the west coast, and DJs, Hotthobo, XL Middleton and JFO who will be playing the best in modern funk and classic boogie vinyl in between the live sets. Additionally the labels Voltaire Records, Hobo Camp, and MoFunk will be present, promoting, and selling merchandise, including limited edition MFF 7” handcut lathes (featuring a track by Diamond Ortiz, and a Remix of The Pendletons from XL Middleton), which are produced specifically for this event.
The Pendletons is a long-standing boogie-funk and modern soul project of E da Boss and Trailer Limon. The group emerged with their very first release in 2010, a 7” inch of “Coming Down/Waiting On You”, with additional synth work by E.Live, on the Slept On record label, which set the tone for the group to emerge... it instantly became a cult classic receiving constant play at nights like Sweater Funk and Funkmosphere, and fetching for serious sums among collectors. In 2013, they followed up with another 7”; featuring K-Maxx, Jacqueline Mari and Songbird Remos and later a very limited flexi-disc release title “Winning Ova You”. Now in 2016, they return to the fold in full form with burgeoning live performances backed by a large group of vocal and instrumental guests, and their new release, the “Gotta Get Out” EP and “Can’t Nobody” 7”, on Voltaire Records.
Diamond Ortiz is back with a fresh selection of original material with his LP “Loveline” releasing on MoFunk Records, shining light on his masterful production, playing of instruments, singing and signature talkbox stylings. Drenched in G-funk synth bass and feel-good boogie vibes, sunshine synths and clean guitars, icy vocals and soulful talkboxes spitting game in harmony, Diamond is carrying the torch of his OG funk mentors into the future. Honed over many years on stages and in studios across the Bay Area and LA since youth, Diamond's grassroots DIY recordings and live show are filled with flavor and feel, and the culture of the scenes he's grown up around. Zackey Force Funk was born into this wild world in Tucson, AZ in 1974. In and out of prison since the age of 17, ZFF began producing on pirated software his brother gave to him once he had given up a life crime to focus on writing tunes and raising his family. First discovered by Kutmah back in the golden era of Myspace, Zackey's signature "Force Funk Sound" swiftly grabbed the attention of a number of formidable producers. Collaborations followed shortly after with the likes of Salva, Lazer Sword, Lorn, Baron Zen, Daedelus and B. Bravo, as well as forming the group Demon Queen with Tobacco. As these tunes were scattered across various labels, finding their homes on their respective collaborator's projects, ZFF continued to hone his style, delving deeper into the psychedelic future funk realm of which he has created for himself. The fruits of his discipline were showcased on his latest LP “Chrome Steel Tiger”, and his debut LP entitled 'Money Green Viper", both released on LA based collective Hit+Run.
XL Middleton is a Southern California based funk producer and founder of MoFunk Records. XL Middleton can be heard as the MC on Dogg Master's infamous "Pop Lock Funk", and has produced albums for other artists, most recently the Modern Funk anthem "Press Play" featuring Zackey Force Funk, and the Moniquea LP "Yes, No, Maybe". His DJ sets span Boogie, Disco, G-Funk and classic soul staples and oddities.
Randy "Hotthobo" Ellis is a co-owner and label manager of Voltaire Records and Hobo Camp out San Francisco and Los Angeles respectively, and is 1/2 of the production duo RELISH and also a frequent contributor/collaborator to Loose Shus, Elegant Borzoi, and Chautauqua. His 100% vinyl sets journey deep into an abyss of new, classic, and obscure 12" and 7" records, with a focus toward high-end boogie, disco, two step, sweet soul, italo, house and modern funk.
