Speakers
Mattias Rost
HCI researcher and programmer, at the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow.
Before coming to Glasgow he was a PhD student at Mobile Life Centre and SICS. He defended his PhD thesis “Mobility is the Message: Experiments with Mobile Media Sharing” at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences at Stockholm University.
His research interests are mobile, social, and location based services, where he designs, builds, and studies these systems to understand them in use. Following from the work in his thesis, he has a particular interest in media sharing, and what it is people are expressing and communicating when communicating using technology.
Dyaa Albakour
Post-doctoral researcher in the Terrier Information Retrieval research group within the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow.
Under supervision of Dr. Iadh Ounis and Dr. Craig Macdonald, he is currently working on the Integrated Multimedia City Data project in the newly established Urban Big Data Centre (ubdc.ac.uk).
Dyaa specialises in Information Retrieval (IR). Recently, with colleagues working on the EU FP7 SMART project, he has been involved in developing new methods for information access in smart cities. This includes event retrieval models from social and sensor streams, and venue suggestion models that harness location-based social networks, such as FourSquare. This work has resulted in the "Entertain Me" mobile app, which employs a probabilistic model to suggest personalised and popular venues for users to visit in the near future.
Dyaa also serves on the committee of the Information Retrieval Specialist Group (IRSG) at the British Computer Society (BCS). He has been involved in organising the annual Search Solutions conference in London (2012, 2013 and 2014). Last year, he also co-organised the Information Access in Smart Cities (i-ASC 2014) workshop in Amsterdam in conjunction with ECIR 2014.
