MoA Special: Alternative Careers in Architecture is a series of MoA talks that explores the vision, ideas and approaches that architects bring to other professional environments. For the latest iteration the Museum of Architecture has brought together a broad spectrum of architects to talk about their respective forays into areas that go beyond traditional practice, featuring explorations into the power of data, communities, exhibitions, graphics and fashion.

About the Speakers:

Holly Lewis co-founded We Made That in 2006. Since then the practice has been decidedly disinterested in what people think architects ‘should’ do and has instead built a socially-driven portfolio that includes research, strategy making, policy writing, engagement, public realm, master planning and the odd building.

Matt Thornley first started exploring exhibition design with the V&A in 2017 on Frida Kahlo, Making Her Self Up- collaborating with theatre designer, Tom Scutt. Since then, the practice has been working with a broad range of cultural institutions including V&A, V&A Dundee, NGS and Bucks County Museum on temporary and permanent exhibitions. Exhibitions allows his practice to explore wider ideas on experience-based design which feeds into their more traditional ‘architectural’ based work.

Laura Sanjuan founded SODA on simple core values: a young and vibrant, design-led practice delivering beautiful, innovative spaces on the back of interesting collaborations. Over the years, Laura has developed a particularly keen eye for the detailed design stages and this has led to passion for graphic design, which the practice has incorporated into the business. The studio is now able to design every constituent part of a building, from first concept to furniture and wayfinding.

Chris Hildrey is an award-winning architect originally from Liverpool, now living in London. He believes that good design should benefit everyone and so created ProxyAddress to tackle the systemic issues faced by those marginalised by our cities. Through his design studio, Hildrey Studio, he has spoken on television, radio, and in the Houses of Parliament about the role of design and the arts to effect positive social change.
