Event description

Description

Please join us for lunch and for an informative briefing of MMTC’s Digital Equity Roundtable, New Telecom and Internet Policy Task Force, and “Best Minds” Policy Committee*

Background: In May 2016, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a Lifeline Modernization Order that started the transition of Lifeline from a voice-only subsidy program to a broadband subsidy program. In addition, the Order imposed ambitious service standards and program reforms, and paved the way for new market entrants to serve low-income communities, Lifeline Broadband Providers (LBPs). In December 2016 and again in January 2017, the Wheeler FCC designated the inaugural group of LBPs; however, the Pai FCC revoked the designations in February, citing process issues under the previous chairman. Hear from government, nonprofit, consumer advocates, and Lifeline broadband providers about where things stand on the modernization of Lifeline, and the future of the program.
