Event description

Description

Last year, we asked the question, “What can colleges and universities do to focus on K-12 schools as core institutions for community engagement and democratic development?” This year, we are flipping the question to ask what can individuals and community groups do to support public education and how can colleges and universities support that grassroots engagement?

As part of the University of Pennsylvania’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Symposium on Social Change, we will hear from school principals, civic and community leaders and other stakeholders about why community partnerships matters for schools and how you can get involved. The agenda will include a panel of school principals followed by table top discussions on various aspects of “how to” get involved.

The principals panel will feature:

  • Sharif El-Mekki, Principal, Mastery Charter School
  • Meredith Foote, Principal, Overbrook Educational Center
  • Leroy Hall, Principal, Houston Elementary School

Confirmed presenters include:

  • How to start a School Adivsory Council with Molly McGlone, Henry C. Lea SAC
  • How to engage youth in creating a healthier school with Jarrett Stein, Rebel Ventures along with some RV youth
  • How to mobilize resources of colleges and universities in schools with Caitlin Fritz, PHENND
  • How to build parent leadership with Pep Marie, Philly SUN
  • How to advocate for special needs children with Sabra Townsend
  • How to better engage parents in schools with Stacey Scott, Manager of Education and Strategic Planning, Alliance for Progress Charter School
  • How to get involved with the new Philadelphia School Board with members of the Board of Education

This event is sponsored by the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, Penn’s African-American Resource Center, and PHENND (Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development).

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Refreshments will be served at 5:00PM. Event will beging promptly at 5:30 PM.
