Event description

Description

Join Repair the the World in learning more about housing justice issues with a talk by the New York City Commission on Human Rights, followed by a workshop led by the Metropolitan Council on Housing.

Dinner will be provided buffet-style, followed by presentations about housing discrimination and tenant's rights in NYC and about the fight to renew and strengthen the rent laws in the face of gentrification and rent increases. We will also participate in advocacy projects such as signing postcards to send to our representatives.

The NYC Commission on Human Rights is the city agency responsible for enforcing and educating the public on the Human Rights Law, one of the most comprehensive civil rights laws in the country. The Commission works to combat discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations based on race, religion, age, national origin, alienage or citizenship status, gender (including sexual harassment), gender identity, sexual orientation, and more.

The Metropolitan Council on Housing (also known as the Met Council) is a tenants' rights membership organization made up of New York City tenants who believe in the motto of "housing for people, not profit." Formed over 50 years ago, the Met Council fights for a city where everyone has access to safe, decent, affordable housing. They organize tenants to stand up not both for their individual rights and for changes to housing policies.

Accessibility info: The Repair the World workshop is not ADA compliant because of the lack of bathroom space but is otherwise wheelchair accessible. The workshop does not have any stairs, however, the floor is a bit uneven at some points. We will be sitting in chairs.
