An Introduction to Mixology and Home Bartending,

via Elixir's Pioneering Cocktails of the Last Decade

Including the tools, terminology, and techniques

behind many modern and classic cocktails,

and tips for both building your home bar and enjoying your cocktailing about San Francisco.

Taught by Elixir Proprietor, H. Joseph Ehrmann

3 hrs – Through the building of three (3) original cocktails that helped pioneer the culinary cocktail movement of the 2000s (from the current Elixir menu), this class teaches:

  • the fundamentals of home bartending and home bar set up
  • the necessary tools and products to stock your home bar
  • easy formulas for great cocktail construction 

By rediscovering these drinks and the ways they can be made you will come to understand not only how you really like your cocktails to be made, but how to order them so that you always get them that way, and more importantly, how to make them (and many more) for your friends and guests while entertaining. You will leave with a new perspective and a new set of skills that you can build upon in future classes.

Taught by H. Joseph Ehrmann, Proprietor of historic San Francisco saloon, Elixir (listed as one of the "Top Bars in America" by GQ Magazine, Esquire Magazine, and Food and Wine Magazine and recently named "Top 40 Whisky Bars in America by Whiskey Advocate Magazine).

This class will change monthly based on seasonality but will focus on the current #ElixirClassics Cocktail Menu and feature drinks from that menu. The chosen drinks represent Ehrmann's interpretations of some of the classic formulas you need to learn. Those drinks have been very successful items on the Elixir menu over the last decade plus!

October 11th - Autumn & Halloween Entertaining Punches and Cocktails

November (TBD) - Plan Your Bar for the Holidays and New Year's Eve

This class is offered from 7pm to 10pm . All materials are included and you get to consume everything you make! PLEASE EAT BEFORE CLASS.  Students must be 21 years old and older and will be identified at the beginning of class.

 Boothby Center Mixology 101 Class

We only use all-natural, fresh ingredients and top-shelf spirits.

Neighborhood parking is difficult and WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT DRIVE, if you are going to drink your cocktails. Parking options: Hoff Street garage or street parking. Bart 16th Street stop is 2 blocks away and we are centrally located for easy taxi access.

As the second oldest continually operating saloon in San Francisco, Elixir is a testament to the storied saloon history of the wildest of Wild West towns. H. Joseph Ehrmann is the twelfth proprietor since 1858, having lovingly restored its Victorian bones in 2003 and bringing the bar to international renown while playing a significant role in the revival of cocktail culture in the early 2000s. Today it boasts one of the best whiskey collections in the country (over 450 bottles) and 365 days of service, never closing to the public for private events. As Ehrmann continues to invest in historic research and physical restoration, the saloon is poised to continue serving San Francisco, and the world, for generations to come.
