Event description

Description

During eight 2-hour sessions, learn to construct your own creative sculptures from repurposed objects, inspired by works on view at the Newark Museum. Manipulate and transform found and commonplace materials like discarded textiles, plastics, paper, wire, wood, beads and small household objects into art works, using two and three dimensional assemblage and construction techniques.

This creative course is for adults ages 55+ on Thursdays Sept. 27 - Nov. 15, 2018 from 10am to 12pm. Thanks to the generous support of Aroha Philanthropies’ Seeding Vitality Arts program, this course, normally a $220 value, is offered at the reduced rate of $80.

Teaching Artist Antonia A. Perez is a mixed-media artist who collects discarded household detritus and repurposes it into sculpture, works on paper, paintings and site-specific installations. Her work focuses on the transformation of materials into a range of forms representing domestic objects or abstract structures referencing the environment, the home, textile design and culture, and hand-made traditions. She has exhibited her work locally and nationally, including El Museo del Barrio, the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, and the Queens Museum. Antonia holds a MFA from Queens College, CUNY. Learn more about Antonia at http://antoniaaperezstudio.com/home.html
