Mission Impossible: Bring Back the Day

(the $5,000 Dance Competition)

Over the last two decades, Chicago dancers and perfomers have been taking the city by storm.  Whether performing in front of thousands of people in the Budbilliken parades, on stage with some of today's superstars, or teaching dance classes for youth development.  These dancers have not only made an impact within the immediate communites, but for the world to see.

It all started in the mid 1980's, where DJs would reference and create, Chicago house music.  "Chicago House Music", refers to music produced in houses of DJs, during the mid to late 1980s within Chicago,. The term is generally used to refer to the first ever house music productions, which were by Chicago-based artists in the 1980s.

A huge part of the success of Chicago dancers, have been the ability to create and form teams, also known as "dance groups", formed by a long stanging pedigree of both male and female, footworkers and dancers alike.

Each group would rehearse vigorously for hours, weeks, if not months to prepare for various competitions, in and out of state.

Dancing and footworking in the early 90's/2000's has been defined, as some of the best moments in time within the Chicago Underground Dance Industry.  From groups scurrying to use a song for the first time before another team got to perform to it, or the extravagant costumes and props, people would travel near and far to see teams perform.

The competitions would run 2-3 hours, each group performing a minimum of 7-10 mins. The 7-10 minutes may sound tiresome, but each minute of the show was, literally on the edge of your seat.

Just to get an idea, the groups performance would flow as such:

  • Introduction/Skit
  • Dance (Female, Male, CoEd)
  • Footwork
  • Bow/Rock-away

There went the 10 minutes...HEHE

The panel of judges would be assembled with dance leaders/DJs, throughout the community.  Every now and then, the judging style would be "Apollo Style", where the crowd chooses the winning team.  Some of the categories included: Best Costumes, Music Choice & Stunts, to name a few.

Over the last decade, some of the leaders of the Chicago dance industry have taken on teaching youth full time and traveling the world with their teams.  Leaving the tribe of "Dance Groups", a thing of the past...
