Event description
Outdoor performance bringing together stories, movements and images from Tara Fatehi Irani’s yearlong daily project with music by Sam Warner

About this event

“Casting a spell of connection between strangers in locations around the world, from London to Tehran, Newcastle to Zurich.” Tim Etchells, artist

Mishandled Archive is a multi-faceted project and in the past four years has taken the form of performances in galleries and theatres, an exhibition, lecture-performances, workshops and a book. This new outdoor performance reignites the original inspiration of the project, bringing it back to a public space and allowing passers-by to become coincidental spectators. Be ready to shimmy, sing or just watch. Bring an umbrella in case of rain and some drinks in case of sun.

In 2017, Tara made daily installations in public spaces using a collection of photographs and documents she had collected through the years from family archives mostly connected to her home country, Iran. Every day for 365 days, Tara placed one archival image in a public space in London, Tehran, Milan, Hamburg, Zurich and elsewhere. As part of the installations, she performed a dance and wrote the score of the dance on the back of the photo. Passers-by became spontaneous audiences of these actions and many people found the documents or photos and wrote to Tara. Each of these daily interventions is also documented in a post on Instagram.

MORE ABOUT THE BOOK:

“Fatehi Irani's nomadic performative process creates new worlds.” – Professor Amelia Jones, University of Southern California

“Tara Fatehi Irani's project conjures a tender and intimate approach to re-imagining the textures of social networks in the age of digital media, and intervenes poetically in urban anonymity.” – Catherine Wood, Senior Curator of International Art (Performance) at Tate Modern

With multitudes of stunning photographs, dance scores, essays and stories told in hashtags, Mishandled Archive records and reflects on Tara Fatehi Irani’s intentional scattering and displacement of a family archive. Elegantly designed by David Caines, the book offers a space to reimagine what it means to create, disseminate, dismantle and continue the life of an archive. More ...
