It’s a Mira-Curl! The Des Moines Curling Club is Offering Lessons.

It’s sweeping the nation, it’s the hottest thing on ice, it’s your best shot at being an Olympian, and it’s way harder than it looks. The Des Moines Curling Club is offering a 4-week skills development course for beginners and new curlers (ages 16 and up with 0-2 years-ish of experience).

Over the course of 4 lessons, you can expect to learn the basic rules of curling, proper technique, strategy, and etiquette of the game. Don’t worry about equipment—we’ve got you covered. Just wear loose, comfortable, warm clothes and clean sneakers. 

The league will be held on Friday evenings at 7pm.  

The cost of the league is $100 - You can sign up as a team (4) or an individual. If there are people you want to play with, you MUST sign up as a team.

Week 1 - 5/6

• Overview of game/rules/basic strategy
• Intro to equipment, positions, skip signals, scoring
• Getting into and out of the hack
• Delivery drills (sliding out of hack—center and wide; focus on handle motion—10 and 2)
• Throw a couple of ends 

Week 2 - 5/13

• Review of week 1
• Back in the hack to refine handle motions
• Intro to sweeping skills
• Scenario shots; guards, takeouts, draws
• Throw some ends

Week 3 - 5/20

• Review of Weeks 1 & 2
• Curling etiquette
• Skipping strategy
• Rotating shooting, sweeping, skipping skip drill
• Throw some ends 

Week 4 - 5/27

• Heavy review of weeks 1-3
• A couple of warm-up throws
• Team play
