Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Update:

What Minnesota Hospitals and Providers need to know

June 13, 2018, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Speaker: Pamela Heggie, MD, IBCLC, FAAP, FABM, Central Pediatrics, St. Paul, MN

Participants will learn about the April 2018 WHO/UNICEF revision of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. Changes to the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding will be reviewed and there will be discussion about how these changes will impact breastfeeding support in hospitals providing maternity and newborn care.


1)     Review the statewide history and current status of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative in Minnesota - where we were, where we are now and where we are going and why.

2)     Outline the changes that WHO/UNICEF have made in the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as described in the April 2018 Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative revision.

3)     Discuss the reasons behind these changes and their impact on breastfeeding support and newborn care in Minnesota hospitals.

What health care providers need to know about human donor milk and the Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies

Speakers: Nancy Fahim, MD, UM Physicians, Evelyn Lindholm, RNC, BSN, IBCLC and Jill Lindquist, RNC, PHN, BSN, IBCLC, North Memorial Health


1)     1)  Identify human donor milk need for the premature and term newborn while mother is waiting for her milk supply to increase.

2)     2)  Explain the process of having donor milk available for the NICU, Special Care and Normal Newborn units in the hospital setting.

3)     3)  Describe the progress and status of milk depots and development of a Human Milk Banking Association of North America non-profit milk bank in Minnesota.
