Technology has the ability to connect us in more intricate and meaningful ways than we can even imagine. What is possible when we augment our biology? What happens as our emotions and our technology are intertwined?
Join Mindshare LA and Raw Science TV for a talk by Skip Rizzo from USC's Institute of Creative Technologie PLUS an exclusive film screening of “The Nostalgist”, a winner of the Raw Science Film Festival! After the short film there will be a Q&A featuring Skip and critically acclaimed German actress Nina Franoszek.
Experience a live demo of the Virtual Iraq/Afghanistan PTSD treatment system!
What was considered a “failed” technology just 5 years ago is now riding a wave of public enchantment, especially in the entertainment and digital game industry. VR is now also a tool for clinical assessment, intervention and research for mental health, rehabilitation and medical purposes.
“The Nostalgist is relevant to the intersection of health, medicine, and technology of the future. As the human lifespan increases, what is the mind-body connection in the virtual world? A neurococktail of chemicals rush into the brain whether feeling emotions in a physical or digital realm. Which one will we feel nostalgia for as digital health advances the human experience?”
-- John Nosta, a leading voice in digital health and member of the Google Health Advisory Board

Skip Rizzo / @USC_ICT
Associate Director for Medical Virtual , Reality, USC ICT
War is perhaps one of the most challenging situations that a human being can experience. The incidence of the fear-based pathology, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in returning "Operation Enduring Freedom" and "Operation Iraqi Freedom” (OIF/OEF) military personnel has created a significant behavioral healthcare challenge. One emerging form of treatment for combat-related PTSD that has shown promise involves using immersive Virtual Reality for the delivery of exposure therapy (VRET). Skip will detail how virtual reality applications are being designed and implemented to prevent, identify and treat combat-related PTSD in OIF/OEF service members and veterans.
Albert “Skip” Rizzo is a clinical psychologist and Associate Director at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies. He is also a research professor with the USC Dept. of Psychiatry and at the USC Davis School of Gerontology. Skip conducts research on the design, development and evaluation of Virtual Reality systems targeting the areas of clinical assessment, treatment and rehabilitation across the domains of psychological, cognitive and motor functioning and treating PTSD, TBI, Autism, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and other clinical conditions. In his spare time, he plays rugby, listens to music, rides his motorcycle.
