Adventure Travel: From Tuxedos to Cross Dressing
Douglas Campbell / Co-Founder & Curator, Mindshare LA

Exploration occurs across a massive spectrum of scale. This Mindshare salon will take attendees on an adventure from the tiny world of particle physics and the elusive Higgs Boson to the far reaches of our solar system by highlighting the upcoming Mars lander. OK, we'll also be throwing in an element of ridiculousness for good measure.

Douglas is a community constructor, experience engineer and tuxedo traveler. He co-founded Mindshare LA in 2006 as well as the interactive collective Syyn Labs in 2009. He likes volunteering at an organic farm and wearing tuxedos for charitable escapades.

The God (Damn) Particle: Why should we care?
Kevin Hickerson / Ph.D.c, Experimental Physics, Caltech

So what the hell is the Higgs boson anyways, and why should we care? The announcement by the physicists at the Large Hadron Collider — the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator — was hailed by some scientists as a success worthy of a Nobel Prize, and equated the results to the discovery of DNA. Amidst all the excitement and confusion, Kevin Hickerson comes as a beacon to break it down for us. A Physicist by trade, Hickerson will help us finally come to terms with what this particle is, how it was discovered, and what it means for the world of science and beyond.

Kevin Hickerson is a PhD candidate in Physics at the California Institute of Technology in the Kellogg Radiation Laboratory. His research involves studying the uses of ultracold neutrons at LANSCE, the proton accelerator at Los Alamos National Laboratory. His research interests also include extensions to the Standard Model. He was a Science Advisor on the hit blockbluster Thor and has also worked for Idealab in Old Town Pasadena, California. He is a science enthusiast with a perchance toward adventure.

The Why - and How - of JPL's Most Advanced Lander Yet
Matt Clausen / Art Director, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Matt thrives in the creative space between disciplinary and planetary spheres. As the Art Director for Team Conductor, in the Human Interfaces group at the NASA Jet propulsion Laboratory, Matt collaborates with Scientists, Programmers and engineers to design interfaces that control robots and spacecraft. He also creates video games, interactive web experiences and 3D animations in an effort to engage the public in NASA’s pursuit of exploration and discovery. Needless to say, he loves his job.

In anticipation of the Mars Science Laboratory, or Curiosity Rover landing ( on August 5th), Matt and the rest of Team Conductor at JPL, recently released the “NASA Mars Landing” game for Xbox Kinect. It was produced in collaboration between NASA, Microsoft and Smoking Gun Studios. Matt has a Master’s degree in Film and Animation from the University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts. When he’s not ideating with NASA he is with his Fiancée Mary and their two cats Pickle and Mars.

9:30pm - Late (Free after 10pm) / Music & Networking & Art!

Mindshare LA holds monthly workshops, salons and movie screenings that gather ~1000 Angelenos for evenings of inspiration and interaction. Our main event held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month includes live music, games, art and a curated program of short, eclectic presentations. Over the years Mindshare has become a mecca for intellectuals, artists, scientists and other progressive characters to meet, broaden their perspective and expand their networks.

Mindshare's ballooning popularity is emblematic of generation steeped in chaos and an unabashed need for personal fulfillment. If you ever come to LA, come to Mindshare.

A forward-thinking cultural salon. New ideas flow as liberally as the alcohol.

--Brand X

This is what it would be like if the internet jumped out of the box and grabbed your arm for a trip into Alice's Wonderland of ideas and madmen.

--KCET Online (LA PBS affiliate)

A forum for human technology in its most literal form - shared knowledge. Fueled by fancy pastries, an exceptionally well-stocked open bar and a room abuzz with stylish people.
